{"id":35126,"date":"2018-10-31T15:21:33","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T09:51:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=35126"},"modified":"2018-10-31T15:21:33","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T09:51:33","slug":"three-isnt-a-crowd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/three-isnt-a-crowd\/","title":{"rendered":"Three isn\u2019t a crowd:"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/opinion\/editorials\/three-isnt-a-crowd-india-japan-special-strategic-global-partnership-summit-doklam-china-indo-pacific-brics-shinzo-abe-narendra-modi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three isn\u2019t a crowd<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China was the looming presence in this year\u2019s India-Japan Special Strategic and Global partnership summit.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What are the issues concerning China?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cToward a Free, Open and Prosperous Indo-Pacific\u201d, the title of the joint statement, gave away the common concern weighing down both countries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India went into the summit fresh from settling the Doklam row with China.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A cordial BRICS summit in Xiamen, China, was a mood elevator but not enough to wipe out the worry that there might be more Doklams .<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japan, which has its own troubles with China over territory and much historical animosity, was the only country that openly articulated its support for India during those two troubled months.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What does the joint statement signify?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The joint statement calls for a \u201crules-based order\u201d in the Indo-Pacific region where \u201csovereignty and international law are respected, and differences resolved through dialogue, and where all countries, large or small, enjoy freedom of navigation and overflight, sustainable development, and a free, fair and open trade and investment system\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The joint statement also took a swipe at China\u2019s OBOR initiative by calling for transparency in the development of connectivity and infrastructure development in the region, and reaffirmed the India-Japan project to connect Africa and Asia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The defence and security co-operation between the two countries has steadily risen over the last few years, with the Malabar joint exercise the most high-profile representation of this.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Way ahead<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both New Delhi and Tokyo have to keep in mind that they have independent relations with China, with problems unique to their own bilateral histories.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The next step in the India-Japan partnership has to be constructive engagement with China.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three isn\u2019t a crowd: Context China was the looming presence in this year\u2019s India-Japan Special Strategic and Global partnership summit.
