Wikipedia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"116\" data-end=\"270\">Hoolock gibbons <strong>are primates<\/strong> and fall under the category of <strong data-start=\"217\" data-end=\"225\">apes<\/strong>, which are evolutionarily <strong>closest to humans<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is also known as the <strong>White-Browed Gibbon<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Scientific name:<\/strong> <em>Bunopithecus hoolock<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"276\" data-end=\"463\">They are the<strong data-start=\"296\" data-end=\"335\"> only ape species <\/strong>found in India<strong data-start=\"296\" data-end=\"335\">.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Habitat: <\/strong>They thrive in <strong>tropical semi-deciduous<\/strong> and <strong>tropical deciduous forest. <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>They prefer to live in <strong>three-tier canopies<\/strong> (high, middle, and low), which offer shelter, food, and suitable trees for movement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Distribution:<\/strong> The Hoolock gibbon is found in <strong>northeast India<\/strong>, <strong>Bangladesh<\/strong>, <strong>Myanmar<\/strong>, and <strong>southern China<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>In India, it inhabits the regions south of the <strong>Brahmaputra River<\/strong>, including states such as <strong>Assam<\/strong>, <strong>Meghalaya<\/strong>, <strong>Arunachal Pradesh<\/strong>, <strong>Mizoram<\/strong>, <strong>Nagaland<\/strong>, <strong>Manipur<\/strong>, and <strong>Tripura<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>According to Zoologists, Northeast of India houses <strong>two species<\/strong> of the ape \u2014 the\u00a0<strong>eastern hoolock gibbon<\/strong> (Hoolock leuconedys) found in a specific region of Arunachal\u00a0Pradesh and the <strong>western hoolock gibbon<\/strong> (Hoolock hoolock) distributed elsewhere in the\u00a0Northeast.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It is considered a <strong>keystone species<\/strong>, meaning its presence is vital for the health of the ecosystem<\/li>\n<li><strong>Physical Characteristics<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It exhibits <strong>sexual dichromatism<\/strong>: Adult males have black coats with prominent white eyebrows, while adult females have a golden, buff, or brownish coat.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Size and Weight<\/strong>: The head and body length ranges from <strong>45.7\u201363.0 cm<\/strong>, and the weight of males is between <strong>6.1\u20137.9 kg<\/strong>, while females weigh between <strong>6.0\u20136.6 kg<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Hoolock gibbons are known for their <strong>territorial songs<\/strong>, which are loud, elaborate duets sung by <strong>both<\/strong> males and females.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diet:<\/strong> The Hoolock gibbon is primarily <strong>frugivorous<\/strong>, feeding on fruits, leaves, flowers, tender buds, and insects.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Threats: <\/strong>The Hoolock gibbon faces significant threats due to <strong>habitat fragmentation<\/strong>, largely caused by deforestation and agricultural activities like <strong>jhuming<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Poaching<\/strong> for meat and medicinal purposes is a major threat to the species.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: A family of stranded Hoolock gibbons was rescued following a difficult four-day operation in Horu Pahar village, located in the Lower Dibang Valley district of Arunachal Pradesh.
