Munshi sitting in the front of the Constitution Hall during a meeting of the Constituent Assembly.\" \/><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li>The Constituent Assembly was <strong>created in 1946<\/strong> through the British Cabinet Mission Plan.<\/li>\n<li>It was tasked with drafting the Constitution for independent India, as part of the anti-colonial freedom movement.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Origin:\u00a0<\/strong> The concept of a Constituent Assembly was first proposed by <strong data-start=\"176\" data-end=\"188\">M.N. Roy<\/strong> in 1934, long before India gained independence.\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li>It gained momentum when the <strong data-start=\"270\" data-end=\"298\">Indian National Congress<\/strong> officially demanded it in <strong>1935<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The British government eventually agreed to the demand in the <strong data-start=\"398\" data-end=\"422\">August Offer of 1940<\/strong>, and the <strong data-start=\"432\" data-end=\"464\">Cabinet Mission Plan of 1946<\/strong> further detailed the structure of the Assembly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The Constituent Assembly first convened on <strong data-start=\"620\" data-end=\"639\">9 December 1946<\/strong>, marking the beginning of the journey to create a free and democratic India.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Composition:\u00a0<\/strong> The <strong data-start=\"793\" data-end=\"817\">Constituent Assembly<\/strong> initially had <strong data-start=\"832\" data-end=\"847\">389 members<\/strong> as per the <strong data-start=\"859\" data-end=\"883\">Cabinet Mission Plan<\/strong>. <strong data-start=\"890\" data-end=\"897\">296<\/strong> members were from the provinces and <strong data-start=\"934\" data-end=\"940\">93<\/strong> were from the princely states.\n<ul>\n<li>Following the Partition in 1947, the Assembly&#8217;s membership reduced to <strong data-start=\"1047\" data-end=\"1054\">299<\/strong>. 229 members represented the 12 British Indian provinces.<\/li>\n<li><strong>70 members <\/strong>represented the<strong> Princely States<\/strong> and <strong>6 members<\/strong> represented <strong>backward tribes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00a0Allocation of seats in the Constituent Assembly<\/strong>: Seats were allocated based on population and community, ensuring representation for different groups, including Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, and others.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Notable Members<\/strong>: <strong data-start=\"1799\" data-end=\"1822\">Dr. Rajendra Prasad<\/strong> was elected <strong data-start=\"1835\" data-end=\"1848\">President<\/strong> of the Constituent Assembly.\n<ul>\n<li><strong data-start=\"1883\" data-end=\"1904\">Dr. B.R. Ambedkar<\/strong> played the most crucial role as <strong data-start=\"1937\" data-end=\"1975\">Chairman of the Drafting Committee<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Other significant leaders included <strong data-start=\"2017\" data-end=\"2037\">Jawaharlal Nehru<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2039\" data-end=\"2067\">Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2069\" data-end=\"2096\">Maulana Abul Kalam Azad<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2098\" data-end=\"2113\">K.M. Munshi<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"2119\" data-end=\"2148\">Alladi Krishnaswami Ayyar<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>15 women members, including <strong>Hansa Mehta, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, and Dakshayani Velayudhan.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Dominated by upper-caste members, but also had significant Dalit representation, notably<strong> B.R. Ambedkar and others like S. Nagappa and Dakshayani Velayudhan (the only Dalit woman in the Assembly).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Political Affiliation:<\/strong> Around <strong>80% of members<\/strong> were elected on a <strong>Congress ticket<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The Assembly had members from across the political spectrum, including socialists like <strong>K.T. Shah, conservatives like Syama Prasad Mookerjee (Hindu Mahasabha), and liberals like Minoo Masani.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>How were the members of the Constituent Assembly elected?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Members were <strong data-start=\"1471\" data-end=\"1493\">indirectly elected<\/strong> by the <strong data-start=\"1501\" data-end=\"1538\">Provincial Legislative Assemblies<\/strong>, which had been elected under the <strong data-start=\"1573\" data-end=\"1606\">Government of India Act, 1935<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The election was conducted using <strong data-start=\"1646\" data-end=\"1677\">proportional representation<\/strong> through the <strong data-start=\"1690\" data-end=\"1725\">single transferable vote system<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Duration and Sessions:<\/strong> The Constituent Assembly first convened on <strong>9 December 1946<\/strong>.
