{"id":35178,"date":"2018-10-31T15:38:35","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T10:08:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=35178"},"modified":"2018-10-31T15:38:35","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T10:08:35","slug":"a-fragile-ark-that-shelters-2626-creatures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/a-fragile-ark-that-shelters-2626-creatures\/","title":{"rendered":"A fragile ark that shelters 2,626 creatures:\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-national\/a-fragile-ark-that-shelters-2626-creatures\/article19673678.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A fragile ark that shelters 2,626 creatures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoological Survey of India produces first exhaustive compendium of animal diversity in the Sundarban islands and the threats it faces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Introduction: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sundarbans is the only tiger-mangrove kingdom in the world and is home to globally threatened species such as the Bengal tiger, sea turtle, fishing cat, estuarine crocodile, Gangetic dolphin and river terrapin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Zoological Survey of India\u2019s (ZSI) listings, there are 2,626 animal species in the Indian Sundarbans.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What is the present status of Sundarbans faunal diversity?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Indian segment of the Sundarbans, part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, forms part of the Ganga-Brahmaputra delta across 9,630 sq.km, distributed among 104 islands.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The region hosts 2,487 species that come under the zoological kingdom of Animalia, and 140 under the more primitive Protista.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What are the threats that Sundarbans is \u00a0facing today?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to pressure \u00a0on habitat from people and natural threats have shrunk the mangrove swamp habitat, mammal numbers are declining.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two Rhinos, Swamp deer, Barking deer, and Hog deer and Asiatic Wild Water buffalo are not found in Sundarbans anymore.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are 356 species of birds, the most spectacular being raptors, or birds of prey<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are 11 turtles, including the famous Olive Ridley and Hawskbill sea turtles and the most threatened freshwater species, the River Terrapin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A crocodile, 13 lizards including three species of Monitor Lizards and five Geckos are found here.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rivers, creeks channels and the islands together harbour about 30 snake species, led by the King Cobra, considered vulnerable by IUCN.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mangrove ecosystem covers about 350 species of fish. Cartilaginous fish, which have skeletons of cartilage rather than bone, make up 10.3%.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IUCN conservation status shows 6.3% fish are near-threatened and 4.85% are threatened.
