{"id":352183,"date":"2025-12-17T15:40:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T10:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=352183"},"modified":"2025-12-17T15:40:00","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T10:10:00","slug":"param-vir-chakra-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/param-vir-chakra-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Param Vir Chakra Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>News: <\/strong>President inaugurated Param Vir Dirgha at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Vijay Diwas, displaying portraits of all 21 Param Vir Chakra awardees.<\/p>\n<h2>About Param Vir Chakra Award<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_352184\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-352184\" style=\"width: 192px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-352184 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Source-Aaj-Tak.jpg?resize=192%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Param Vir Chakra Award\" width=\"192\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Source-Aaj-Tak.jpg?resize=192%2C300&amp;ssl=1 192w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Source-Aaj-Tak.jpg?w=267&amp;ssl=1 267w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-352184\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source &#8211; Aaj Tak<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>The Param Vir Chakra is <strong>India<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s highest military decoration<\/strong> for the most exceptional acts of <strong>valour, courage, and self-sacrifice during war<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Introduced on:<\/strong> It was introduced on <strong>January 26, 1950<\/strong>, with <strong>retrospective effect from August 15, 1947.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Conferred by:<\/strong> It is conferred by the <strong>President of India<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Naming:<\/strong> The term Param Vir Chakra literally means the \u201c<strong>Wheel of the Ultimate Brave.<\/strong><strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Eligibility:<\/strong> It is awarded to <strong>officers, men, and women<\/strong> of <strong>all ranks<\/strong> of the <strong>Army, Navy, Air Force, Reserve Forces, Territorial Army<\/strong>\u00a0and other <strong>lawfully constituted armed forces.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It <strong>can be<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>often<\/strong> has been, <strong>awarded posthumously.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Design<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The Param Vir Chakra medal was designed by <strong>Mrs. Savitri Khanolkar<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The medal is <strong>cast in bronze<\/strong> and has a <strong>circular shape<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In the centre, it has the <strong>State Emblem<\/strong> on a raised circle.<\/li>\n<li>Around the State Emblem, there are <strong>four replicas of Indra<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s Vajra<\/strong>, and it is <strong>flanked by the sword of Shivaji<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>On the reverse side, the words <strong>\u201c<\/strong><strong>Param Vir Chakra\u201d<\/strong> are embossed in <strong>Hindi and English<\/strong>, with <strong>two lotus flowers<\/strong>placed between the Hindi and English text.<\/li>\n<li>The fitting uses a <strong>swivel mounting<\/strong>, and the decoration is suspended from a <strong>straight swivelling suspension bar<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is held by a <strong>32 mm purple ribbon<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>First winner:<\/strong> <strong>Major Somnath Sharma<\/strong> of the <strong>Kumaon Regiment<\/strong> was the first recipient.\n<ul>\n<li>Till now, <strong>only 21 people had been given the Param Vir Chakra award.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>About Gallantry Awards in India<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Gallantry awards are instituted by the <strong>Government of India<\/strong> to <strong>honour bravery and sacrifice of armed forces, other forces, and civilians<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>These awards are announced <strong>twice every year on Republic Day and Independence Day.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>All gallantry awards <strong>may be given posthumously.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Order of precedence of <\/strong>these awards is <strong>the Param Vir Chakra, the Ashoka Chakra, the Mahavir Chakra, the Kirti Chakra, the Vir Chakra and the Shaurya Chakra.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The President presents gallantry awards at <strong>Defence Investiture Ceremonies at Rashtrapati Bhavan.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>However, <strong>the Param Vir Chakra and the Ashoka Chakra<\/strong> are conferred by the President to the awardees on the occasion of the <strong>Republic Day Parade at the Rajpath.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: President inaugurated Param Vir Dirgha at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Vijay Diwas, displaying portraits of all 21 Param Vir Chakra awardees.
