{"id":35220,"date":"2018-10-31T15:50:32","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T10:20:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=35220"},"modified":"2018-10-31T15:50:32","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T10:20:32","slug":"shifting-ties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/shifting-ties\/","title":{"rendered":"Shifting ties:\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/opinion\/editorials\/china-myanmar-junta-look-east-act-east-rohingya-shifting-ties-4837628\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shifting ties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PM Modi\u2019s recent visit to Myanmar marked 70 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Issues:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shifting India-Myanmar ties<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slow pace of India\u2019s reflexes vis-a-vis China to influence neighbours and safeguard their strategic and economic interests.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rohingya Issue<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Shifting India-Myanmar ties<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the last 25 years, India has shifted its stand in a bid to square a complicated relationship.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the side of high principle India stood by <\/span><b>Aung San Suu Kyi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later, India wooed the Myanmar junta which had imprisoned her for nearly two decades.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Suu Kyi was released and Myanmar transitioned to democracy, India had to make another shift.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Slow pace of India\u2019s initiatives under the Look-East policy<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kaladan multi-modal project to connect the north-east Indian states to the rest of India via Myanmar is still incomplete.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The contracts for the remaining work on the ambitious trilateral highway project connecting Manipur to Thailand through Myanmar are yet to be awarded.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The offtake of $500 million-dollar credit line for developmental projects is sluggish.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>China taking the lead<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Myanmar Army continues to play a major role in domestic politics. The generals are more comfortable doing business with China.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China has investments in an already operational oil and gas pipeline from Myanmar to china, port projects, Myanmar-China railway project, mining and hydro-power projects.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Rohingya crisis<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myanmar has been under severe attack from the international community in recent times for what is being considered as \u2018genocide\u2019 against the Rohingya Muslims.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considered by the United Nations as the \u201cmost persecuted minority group in the world\u201d, the Rohingyas are a stateless group of people concentrated in western Myanmar, facing brutal assaults from the Burmese state and military.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PM Modi, on his visit to Myanmar, called it a security issue and did not acknowledge the human rights dimension of the crisis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This came as a respite to the Myanmar leadership, who is facing international condemnation for its handling for the crisis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, India\u2019s stand has given rise to dissatisfaction in Bangladesh who has been considerably affected by the crisis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later, New Delhi had to modify its position on the Rohingya issue, to also acknowledge that there is now a refugee crisis.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Shifting ties:\u00a0 Context: PM Modi\u2019s recent visit to Myanmar marked 70 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
