<strong>most significant archaeological discoveries<\/strong> in the subcontinent.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">It is one of th<strong>e oldest and largest urban centres<\/strong> of the subcontinent\u2019s earliest <strong>Bronze Age civilisation.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Dating:<\/strong> Archaeologists suggest that <strong>Rakhigarhi may date back to around 2500\u20133000 BC,<\/strong> subject to confirmation through Carbon-14 dating.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Findings at the site:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>3 phases:<\/strong> Excavations at Rakhigarhi have revealed evidence of<strong> all three phases of the IVC-<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Early Harappan<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Mature Harappan<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Late Harappan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>DNA evidence:<\/strong> It has yielded the<strong> only known DNA evidence <\/strong>from the Harappan era, offering valuable <strong>insights into the genetic history<\/strong> of the civilisation.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Craft:<\/strong> Large quantities of <strong>steatite beads, semi-precious stone beads, shells, agate, and carnelian objects were found,<\/strong> indicating flourishing craft production and trade.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Hunting tools<\/strong> such as <strong>fish hooks<\/strong> were also recovered.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Town Planning:<\/strong> The settlement was <strong>well planned, with mud and burnt-brick houses, efficient drainage, and proper sanitation.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Excavations indicated <strong>an elite residential area with both burnt-brick and mud-brick structures.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Granary:<\/strong> A <strong>mud-brick granary with rammed earth flooring and multiple chambers<\/strong> was discovered, suggesting organised storage, possibly controlled by public authorities or local elites.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Pottery and seals:<\/strong> A <strong>seal bearing an alligator motif and Harappan script<\/strong> was discovered.\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">The site also yielded <strong>diverse artefacts<\/strong> including blades, shell bangles, stone beads, animal figurines, and copper objects.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thick deposits of Hakra Ware have been found at the site,<\/strong> which are typically associated with <strong>pre-Early Harappan<\/strong> settlements.<\/li>\n<li>Red ware pottery s<strong>uch as dishes-on-stands, jars, bowls, beakers, goblets, and perforated jars<\/strong> reflects advanced ceramic traditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Rituals and burials:<\/strong> <strong>Fire altars and evidence of animal sacrifice point<\/strong> to ritual practices.\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Most burials were <strong data-start=\"939\" data-end=\"950\">typical<\/strong>, involving a <strong>single body in a plain pit laid in a supine position<\/strong> with the head towards the north.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Two <strong>5,000-year-old female skeletons<\/strong> found with pottery and artefacts indicate established burial customs.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong data-start=\"671\" data-end=\"690\">Other Burials<\/strong> contained <strong>complete skeletons<\/strong> laid in <strong>extended positions<\/strong>, selected bones placed in pots and pottery.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong data-start=\"1054\" data-end=\"1074\">Atypical burials<\/strong> included<strong> brick-lined graves, multiple burials in one pit, and
