The FTA was completed in a record <strong>nine months<\/strong>, making it one of India\u2019s fastest negotiated trade deals. Currently, bilateral trade between India and New Zealand stands at <strong>$1.3 billion<\/strong>, and the agreement aims to <strong>double this figure in five years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key Provisions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Market Access for India:<\/strong> India will receive <strong>zero-duty access for all exports<\/strong> to New Zealand.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sectoral Benefits:<\/strong> Labour-intensive sectors such as <strong>textiles, leather and footwear, gems and jewellery, engineering goods, and processed foods<\/strong> will gain from enhanced market access.<\/li>\n<li><strong>MSME and Employment Support:<\/strong> The agreement will promote <strong>MSME growth and create employment opportunities<\/strong> in India.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Services and Skill Mobility:<\/strong> New Zealand will allow trade in <strong>Ayurveda, yoga, and traditional medicine services<\/strong> and facilitate <strong>skilled Indian workers, students, and professionals<\/strong> to live and work there, including extended post-study work visas and work permits of up to 20 hours per week while studying.<\/li>\n<li><strong>FDI Commitment:<\/strong> New Zealand has committed to <strong>investing $20 billion in India by 2030<\/strong>, targeting 118 sectors, with <strong>clawback mechanisms<\/strong> if the investment targets are not met.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Tariff Concessions:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>India will relax tariffs on <strong>95% of imports from New Zealand<\/strong>, with <strong>57% of these products becoming duty-free from day one<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>India has kept <strong>sensitive sectors outside the agreement<\/strong>, including <strong>dairy, milk, cheese, butter, yogurt, onions, sugar, edible oils, spices, and rubber<\/strong>, to protect domestic farmers and industries.<\/li>\n<li>New Zealand will assist in improving the <strong>productivity and quality of Indian fruit growers<\/strong>, especially for exotic fruits like <strong>kiwifruit and apples<\/strong>, through <strong>technical support, capacity building, and supply chain improvements<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Strategic Importance:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>The FTA enhances India\u2019s <strong>global economic footprint<\/strong> and provides integration into <strong>global value chains<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It serves as a <strong>gateway to high-income markets in Oceania and the Pacific Islands<\/strong>, with New Zealand\u2019s per capita income at <strong>$49,380<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The agreement strengthens <strong>soft power diplomacy<\/strong>, with the Indian diaspora constituting <strong>5% of New Zealand\u2019s population<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>India\u2019s FTAs aim to <strong>diversify trade partners<\/strong> beyond traditional markets like the U.S., EU, and China and align with <strong>Make in India, services, digital trade, and investment policies<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Criticisms and Challenges:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>In New Zealand, the FTA has faced criticism for <strong>excluding dairy and agriculture<\/strong>, which are the country\u2019s largest industries. The Foreign Minister has stated that the deal is <strong>\u201cneither free nor fair\u201d<\/strong>, and opposition is expected in Parliament in 2026.<\/li>\n<li>In India, FTAs are sometimes criticized for <strong>widening trade deficits and creating asymmetric gains<\/strong>, as imports often grow faster than exports.
