{"id":35366,"date":"2018-10-31T17:03:08","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T11:33:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=35366"},"modified":"2018-10-31T17:03:08","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T11:33:08","slug":"managing-embankments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/managing-embankments\/","title":{"rendered":"Managing embankments:\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-opinion\/managing-embankments\/article19590665.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Managing embankments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life had come to a standstill in the Ganga-Brahmaputra flood plains with large tracts of land reeling under floods.<\/span> <b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>Consequences of flood<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The flood has resulted into submerged houses, broken bridges, and wasted railway tracks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fury of the waters in the Kishanganj and Katihar districts of Bihar had cut off the road and rail services in north Bengal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consequently, Northeast India\u2019s connectivity by rail with the rest of India has also got disconnected.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Access to water and sanitation is getting difficult.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open use of contaminated water is leading to peak in water-borne diseases.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agricultural land is either covered with sand or remains waterlogged.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Main cause: \u00a0the failure of embankments<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An embankment is an uplifted earthen structure constructed along the river channel to artificially reduce the size of the floodplains by constricting floodwaters to a narrow stretch.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The land outside the embankment is supposed to be safe from floods.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, embankment breach results into flooding the \u201csafe\u201d areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What is required?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A paradigm shifts in the way these embankments are managed is need of the hour.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is vital to involve the community that is close to the embankment in its management.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Result of the study<\/b> <b>done over 100 villages<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study of over 100 villages in the Ganga-Brahmaputram floodplains found that villages in these areas are exposed to diverse water-related hazards depending on their location vis-a-vis an embankment.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those located inside the embankment are vulnerable to floods and riverbank erosion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those outside are prone to extended periods of flood.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This results when the construction of an embankment causes the drainage lines to be blocked.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The regulators in the embankments become dysfunctional, or when there is a backflow of the larger river.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The people in these \u201csafe\u201d areas suffer from a constant fear of embankment breach, which is not entirely unfounded.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Managing embankments:\u00a0 Context Life had come to a standstill in the Ganga-Brahmaputra flood plains with large tracts of land reeling under floods. \u00a0\u00a0 Consequences of flood The flood has resulted into submerged houses, broken bridges, and wasted railway tracks.
