{"id":35370,"date":"2018-10-31T17:04:45","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T11:34:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=35370"},"modified":"2018-10-31T17:04:45","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T11:34:45","slug":"higher-gst-cess-on-luxury-cars-suvs-gets-cabinet-nod","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/higher-gst-cess-on-luxury-cars-suvs-gets-cabinet-nod\/","title":{"rendered":"Higher GST cess on luxury cars, SUVs gets Cabinet nod:\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-business\/higher-gst-cess-on-luxury-cars-suvs-gets-cabinet-nod\/article19590636.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Higher GST cess on luxury cars, SUVs gets Cabinet nod<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are chances that Luxury cars and SUVs become more expensive with the Union Cabinet approving an ordinance to raise the maximum compensation cess.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cess can be levied over and above the 28% GST on such cars, from 15 % to 25%.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>An amendment to GST<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cabinet has approved an amendment to the CGST (Compensation) law.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the implementation of GST, prices of vehicles had substantially come down, whereas smaller vehicles remained untouched.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, these changes will not come into effect immediately.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The final decision of whether the cess should be raised, and by how much, will be taken by the GST Council on September 9.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Next step<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The enabling ordinance will now be sent to the President for promulgation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What will be its effects?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post introduction of the new indirect tax regime, several carmakers had slashed rates to pass the benefits to the consumer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the GST Council decides to increase the cess, luxury car prices may rise up by 8-10%.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Mercedes cars will be costlier by a minimum of Rs. 3 lakh, an Audi Q7 will see a price increase of Rs. 7 lakh, while an Audi A6 will be costlier by Rs. 5 lakh.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This decision, contradictory to the requirement of creating a sustained demand for the luxury car in this market, would rather affect the growth momentum adversely.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Categorization of the cars remains as it is<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia said the categorization of cars has not changed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Previously, the luxury cars where excise duties were levied at 27% or 30%, the same categorization is being followed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no intention of raising the tax rate on any car, other than those which were put in the luxury category and had high excise and VAT rates.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Industry consultants calls it an unfortunate decision<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luxury cars, SUVs and ambulances will get impacted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will increase the post-GST price of many vehicle categories from pre-GST levels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All the vehicles that were attracting 24% or 27% excise duty in the pre-GST regime may potentially attract higher tax under GST because of this decision.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hike in total tax could be as high as 10% in some cases.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Higher GST cess on luxury cars, SUVs gets Cabinet nod:\u00a0 Context There are chances that Luxury cars and SUVs become more expensive with the Union Cabinet approving an ordinance to raise the maximum compensation cess.
