{"id":353984,"date":"2026-01-14T16:00:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T10:30:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=353984"},"modified":"2026-01-14T16:00:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T10:30:09","slug":"shaksgam-valley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/shaksgam-valley\/","title":{"rendered":"Shaksgam Valley"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>News:<\/strong> In response to a statement by the India&#8217;s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, a Chinese government spokesperson reaffirmed the country\u2019s claims to the Shaksgam Valley.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\">About Shaksgam Valley<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 440px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.tibetanreview.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Map-of-India-copy.jpg?resize=440%2C324&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Shaksgam valley\" width=\"440\" height=\"324\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Tibetanreview<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li><strong>Location:<\/strong> The Shaksgam Valley, also known as the<strong> Trans-Karakoram Tract,<\/strong> is a <strong>remote, high-altitude valley located north of the Karakoram mountain range.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It<strong> lies in the Hunza\u2013Gilgit region of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir<\/strong> and is a disputed territory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bordering Region:<\/strong> The valley borders<strong> China\u2019s Xinjiang province <\/strong>to the north, <strong>Pakistan-occupied Kashmir <\/strong>to the south and west<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and the<strong> Siachen Glacier region <\/strong>to the east.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rivers:<\/strong> The valley is drained by the <strong>Shaksgam River<\/strong> which is a <strong>tributary of the Yarkand River<\/strong> (a river of Xinjiang region of China).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Administered by:<\/strong> At present, the valley is administered by China as part of Xinjiang, although India claims it as its territory.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Historical Background: <\/strong>Shaksgam Valley <strong>was part of the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pakistan gained control over the region<\/strong> during the 1947\u201348 conflict.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In 1963, Pakistan ceded the Shaksgam Valley to China<\/strong> through the<strong> Sino-Pakistan Boundary Agreement.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Subsequently, the <strong>Karakoram highway<\/strong> was constructed by China in this Valley.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>India has never accepted this agreement,<\/strong> stating that <strong>the 1963 China-Pakistan Boundary Agreement is illegal and invalid.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Importance <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>valley is strategically important<\/strong> due to its<strong> proximity to the Siachen Glacier<\/strong>, which is the world\u2019s highest militarised zone and <strong>also Karakoram passes. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Control over the region affects India\u2019s security posture in Ladakh<\/strong> and along the northern borders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: In response to a statement by the India&#8217;s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, a Chinese government spokesperson reaffirmed the country\u2019s claims to the Shaksgam Valley.
