At the smallest end is the <strong>pea puffer (<em>Carinotetraodon travancoricus<\/em>)<\/strong>, reaching only about 2\u20132.5 cm.<\/li>\n<li>At the opposite extreme is the <strong>mbu puffer (<em>Tetraodon mbu<\/em>)<\/strong>, which can exceed 60 cm and is among the largest freshwater fishes kept in captivity.<\/li>\n<li>Freshwater pufferfish may contain <strong data-start=\"1621\" data-end=\"1643\">tetrodotoxin (TTX)<\/strong>, one of the most potent natural neurotoxins. Evidence suggests pufferfish <strong data-start=\"2071\" data-end=\"2107\">do not synthesise TTX themselves<\/strong>. The toxin is likely produced by <strong data-start=\"2145\" data-end=\"2179\">symbiotic or ingested bacteria.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Pufferfish are widely regarded as some of the most <strong>intelligent freshwater aquarium fish<\/strong>. They demonstrate strong visual recognition, curiosity, and problem-solving abilities.<\/li>\n<li>Their presence often indicates <strong data-start=\"1145\" data-end=\"1189\">good river health and ecological balance<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conservation status:<\/strong> Some species, such as the <strong data-start=\"1259\" data-end=\"1279\">dwarf pufferfish<\/strong>, are listed as <strong data-start=\"1295\" data-end=\"1309\">Vulnerable<\/strong> on the IUCN Red List.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Threats:<\/strong> Wastewater and industrial pollution, Habitat degradation and overharvesting for the aquarium trade.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: India\u2019s first scientifically confirmed case of freshwater pufferfish poisoning highlights a hidden risk.
