Solar Energy (The Backbone)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Policy Framework:<\/strong> <strong>UP Solar Energy Policy 2022<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Target:<\/strong> Generate <strong>22,000 MW (22 GW)<\/strong> by 2026-27.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strategy:<\/strong> Solar Parks (Bundelkhand), Rooftop Solar (Urban), and Solarization of pumps (Rural).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Key Initiatives:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Solar Cities:<\/strong> <strong>Ayodhya<\/strong> (Model Solar City) and <strong>Varanasi<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li><em>Ayodhya:<\/em> 40 MW solar plant by NTPC, solar streetlights, and solar boats in Saryu.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Floating Solar:<\/strong> Projects in <strong>Lalitpur (Matatila Dam)<\/strong> and <strong>Bakhira Lake<\/strong> to utilize water bodies without land acquisition issues.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bundelkhand Green Energy Corridor:<\/strong> Evacuation infrastructure for 4000 MW solar projects in the arid region.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>B. Bio-Energy &amp; Green Hydrogen<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>UP Green Hydrogen Policy 2024:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Target:<\/strong> Production of <strong>1 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA)<\/strong> of Green Hydrogen\/Ammonia by 2028.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Incentives:<\/strong> Capital subsidy (up to 40% for first 5 projects), 100% exemption on electricity duty for 10 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bio-Energy:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Compressed Biogas (CBG):<\/strong> Promotion of &#8220;Waste to Wealth&#8221; using agricultural stubble and press-mud (sugar mills).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Target:<\/strong> One CBG plant in every district (75 districts).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>C. PM-KUSUM Scheme (Rural Management)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Component A:<\/strong> Setting up small solar power plants on barren land.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Component B:<\/strong> Installation of standalone solar pumps (UP is a top performer).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Component C:<\/strong> Solarization of agricultural feeders to provide day-time reliable power to farmers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Current Affairs Linkage :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana:<\/strong> UP launched a massive drive in 2024-25 to saturate <strong>25 Lakh households<\/strong> with rooftop solar, providing subsidies directly to bank accounts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ayodhya Solar City:<\/strong> By early 2025, Ayodhya achieved the status of UP&#8217;s first <strong>&#8220;Solar City&#8221;<\/strong> with significant street lighting and government buildings running on solar power.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> <a id=\"t2\"><\/a>Non-Renewable Energy Resources (Base Load Management)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Trend:<\/strong> <strong>&#8220;Thermal Efficiency&#8221;<\/strong> and <strong>&#8220;Coal Security.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A. Thermal Power (The Mainstay)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Current Status:<\/strong> Thermal power constitutes <strong>~60-70%<\/strong> of UP&#8217;s total installed capacity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>New Capacity Addition:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Obra &#8216;C&#8217; (2&#215;660 MW):<\/strong> Supercritical technology to reduce emissions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jawaharpur (Etah) &amp; Ghatampur (Kanpur):<\/strong> Recently commissioned units to meet the peak demand (reached 30,000 MW in summer 2024).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Management Strategy:<\/strong> Replacing old, inefficient units (e.g., Panki) with Supercritical units to improve <strong>Plant Load Factor (PLF)<\/strong> and reduce coal consumption per unit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>B. Coal Resources (Sonbhadra Belt)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Location:<\/strong> <strong>Singrauli Coalfields<\/strong> (Sonbhadra) \u2013 &#8220;Energy Capital of India.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Issues:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Safety:<\/strong> Recent mining accidents (e.g., Nov 2025 quarry collapse) highlighting the need for stricter safety audits.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Environment:<\/strong> Fly ash disposal challenges in Sonbhadra; mandatory utilization in brick kilns\/road construction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong> <a id=\"t3\"><\/a>Planning &amp; Management Strategies<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Trend:<\/strong> <strong>&#8220;Smart Grids&#8221;<\/strong> and <strong>&#8220;Energy Conservation.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A. Demand Side Management (DSM)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Smart Metering:<\/strong> Aggressive installation of smart prepaid meters to reduce Aggregate Technical &amp; Commercial (AT&amp;C) losses.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC):<\/strong> Mandatory for new commercial complexes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>B. Institutional Framework<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>UPNEDA:<\/strong> Nodal agency for renewable energy implementation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>UPRVUNL:<\/strong> State Genco managing thermal power plants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Current Affairs Linkage :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Green Kumbh 2025:<\/strong> A strategic plan to power the <strong>Mahakumbh Mela area<\/strong> significantly with renewable energy sources and battery-operated transport.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pumped Storage Projects:<\/strong> UP government signed MoUs in 2024 for <strong>Off-stream Closed Loop Pumped Storage Projects<\/strong> in Sonbhadra and Mirzapur to store solar energy for night-time use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This post is part of our UP Special (Economy) Syllabus Decode with Focused Themes.
