{"id":35445,"date":"2018-10-31T17:37:08","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T12:07:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=35445"},"modified":"2018-10-31T17:37:08","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T12:07:08","slug":"indians-tend-to-borrow-later-in-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/indians-tend-to-borrow-later-in-life\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Indians tend to borrow later in life\u2019:\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-business\/indians-tend-to-borrow-later-in-life\/article19556442.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Indians tend to borrow later in life\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Households\u2019 finance landscape shows near total absence of pension wealth<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Committee\u2019s report<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian households tend to borrow later in life and are more likely to reach retirement age with positive debt balances, which is a source of risk given that they are no longer earning income during these years, a report of the Household Finance Committee observed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the high holdings of real estate, mortgage penetration is low early in life, and subsequently rises as households age.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is also at variance with Indian households\u2019 counterparts in other countries as per the reports.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Indian household finance landscape is distinctive through the near total absence of pension wealth.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pension accounts and investment-linked life insurance products exist only to be used frequently by households located in a small group of states, while in most other states, the contribution of pensions wealth to household wealth is negligible,\u201d reports mentions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High levels of unsecured debt, taken mostly from non-institutional sources such as moneylenders was observed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With such debt generation, which leads to high costs for Indian households, it is likely to lead to households becoming trapped in a long cycle of interest repayments<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report notes a large portion of the wealth of Indian households is in the form of physical assets particularly, gold and real estate. But, it said they can benefit greatly by re-allocating assets towards financial markets and away from gold.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The committee was formed following discussions at the Financial Stability and Development Council headed by Tarun Ramadorai, professor of financial economics, Imperial college London.
