Concept &amp; Policy<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Definition:<\/strong> Integration of trees (Wood lots) on agricultural boundaries (<em>Medh<\/em>) or block plantations along with crops to diversify income.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Policy Push:<\/strong> Adoption of the <strong>National Agroforestry Policy<\/strong> guidelines to relax felling and transit rules for species like Poplar and Eucalyptus.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Key Species:<\/strong> <strong>Poplar<\/strong> (Western UP &#8211; Matchstick\/Plywood industry), <strong>Eucalyptus<\/strong>, <strong>Melia Dubia<\/strong>, and <strong>Semal<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>B. Carbon Credit Monetization (The Game Changer)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Carbon Finance Scheme:<\/strong> UP is the <strong>first state in India<\/strong> to link farmers directly with the Global Carbon Credit Market.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Partner:<\/strong> The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mechanism:<\/strong> Farmers earn &#8220;Carbon Credits&#8221; for trees planted. The state facilitates the sale of these credits to industries (polluters) at approx. <strong>$6 per credit<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pilot:<\/strong> Launched in <strong>Gorakhpur, Meerut, and Lucknow<\/strong> divisions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> <a id=\"t2\"><\/a>Social Forestry: Community &amp; Urban Focus<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Trend:<\/strong> Shift to <strong>&#8220;Urban Lungs (Nagar Van)&#8221;<\/strong> and <strong>&#8220;Emotional Connect.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A. Components of Social Forestry<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Community Forestry:<\/strong> Plantation on <em>Gram Sabha<\/em> land, canal banks, and railway tracks. Focus on fuel, fodder, and fruit (<em>Sahjan\/Moringa<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Urban Forestry:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Nagar Van Yojana:<\/strong> Developing &#8220;City Forests&#8221; in municipal corporations to combat the Urban Heat Island effect.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Miyawaki Forests:<\/strong> Creation of dense micro-forests in congested cities like <strong>Lucknow<\/strong> and <strong>Ghaziabad<\/strong> to act as oxygen cylinders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>B. Innovative Schemes<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Amrit Vans:<\/strong> Developing forests near <strong>Amrit Sarovars<\/strong> (75 ponds per district) to ensure water table recharge.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ayush Van:<\/strong> Dedicated districts for planting medicinal herbs (Neem, Tulsi, Giloy) to support the AYUSH industry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong> <a id=\"t3\"><\/a>Current Affairs Linkages <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>A. &#8220;Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam&#8221; Campaign (2024)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Record Achievement:<\/strong> Under this massive drive, UP achieved a world record by planting over <strong>36.50 Crore saplings<\/strong> in a single day (July 2024).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strategy:<\/strong> Replacing &#8220;Target-based&#8221; planting with &#8220;Emotion-based&#8221; planting to ensure higher survival rates of saplings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>B. Green Cover Targets<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Vision 2027:<\/strong> The state government has set a target to increase UP&#8217;s green cover (Forest + Tree cover) from the current <strong>9.23% to 15%<\/strong> by 2026-27.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Carbon Income:<\/strong> In late 2024, the UP government distributed the <strong>first tranche of payments<\/strong> to farmers in Gorakhpur for carbon credits generated by their agro-forestry plantations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This post is part of our UP Special (Environment &amp; Ecology) Syllabus Decode with Focused Themes.
