Research Gate<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><strong>About:<\/strong><\/strong> The <strong>Northern-Western Ghats<\/strong> of India<strong> are popularly known as \u2018<span class=\"highlight selected\">Sahyadri<\/span>\u2019.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Location:<\/strong> They\u00a0extend from the<strong> Goa\u2013Karnataka\u2013Maharashtra tri-junction <\/strong>in the <strong>south to the Tapi River <\/strong>near the <strong>Gujarat border<\/strong> in the <strong>north.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Length:<\/strong>\u00a0About<strong> 640 km <\/strong>long and<strong> 10 to 20 <\/strong>km wide<strong>. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Height: <\/strong>Average elevation is of around<strong> 1,000 m.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Formation:<\/strong> They are <strong>formed about 60 million years ago<\/strong> due to <strong>massive volcanic activity and<\/strong>\u00a0are <strong>part of the Deccan Traps. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Composition:<\/strong> They are mainly<strong> composed of basalt rocks.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Features<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The<strong> western slopes <\/strong>of the Sahyadris<strong> rise steeply <\/strong>from the Konkan Coast, while the<strong> eastern slopes descend gradually <\/strong>into the Deccan Plateau.<\/li>\n<li>They<strong> act as a natural barrier to the southwest monsoon winds<\/strong> and <strong>receive heavy rainfall <\/strong>on their crestline.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Annual rainfall:\u00a0<\/strong> Between <strong>4,000 and 6,000 mm<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rivers:<\/strong> The rivers<strong> Godavari and Krishna<\/strong> originate from these ranges.<\/li>\n<li><b>Peaks: <\/b><strong>Kalasubai <\/strong>(Highest &#8211; 1,646 meters), Salher and Mahabaleshwar.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Important passes:<\/strong> <strong>Thal Ghat, Bhor Ghat<\/strong>, Naneghat, Amba Ghat, and Amboli Ghat.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vegetation:\u00a0 Evergreen forests<\/strong> are found mainly <strong>along the wet western crestline<\/strong>, while <strong>drier regions<\/strong> support<strong> deciduous forests and grasslands.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Flora:<\/strong> \u00a0It is home to\u00a0<strong>over 4,000 plant species, with at least 159 endemic flowering plants<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sacred groves<\/strong> are protected by local communities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fauna:<\/strong> The Sahyadris support various wildlife species, including the <strong>purple frog (endemic), leopards, gaur, Indian giant squirrel, Tigers, Asian elephants, sloth bears, etc.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Some of the important birds include the<strong> Nilgiri wood-pigeon, Malabar grey hornbill, grey-headed bulbul, and the Malabar parakeet.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Important protected areas:<\/strong> <strong>Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, Chandoli National Park, Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary,<\/strong> etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Historical Importance: <\/strong>Famous <strong>forts<\/strong> like<strong> Raigad, Rajgad, Sinhagad, and Shivneri a<\/strong>re located in this range.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conservation International<\/strong> has recognized the<strong> Sahyadri range (Western Ghats) as part of one of the world\u2019s 34 global biodiversity hotspots.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Operation Sahyadri Checkmate was launched recently by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).
