{"id":35481,"date":"2018-10-31T17:46:45","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T12:16:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=35481"},"modified":"2018-10-31T17:46:45","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T12:16:45","slug":"china-wants-to-go-back-to-1959-lac","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/china-wants-to-go-back-to-1959-lac\/","title":{"rendered":"China wants to go back to \u20181959 LAC\u2019:\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-national\/china-wants-to-go-back-to-1959-lac\/article19536941.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China wants to go back to \u20181959 LAC\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following last week\u2019s scuffle between troops of the two countries along the Pangong lake in Ladakh, China on Monday urged India to abide by the Line of Actual Control (LAC) position of 1959.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Statement of Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying blamed Indian troops of undertaking \u201cviolent actions\u201d and injuring Chinese personnel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ministry urged India to abide by the \u201c1959 LAC\u201d, an apparent reference to the alignment embraced by former Chinese Premier Zhou en Lai in a letter to Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his 2016 book, Choices: Inside the Making of India\u2019s Foreign Policy, former National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon points out that in the proposal of November 1959, the Chinese describe the LAC \u201conly in general terms on maps not to scale\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India rejected the proposal in 1959 and 1962.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zhou en Lai then wrote to Nehru that in the eastern sector, the line \u201ccoincides in the main with the so-called McMahon Line, and in the western and middle sectors, it coincides in the main with the traditional customary line which has consistently been pointed out by China\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ms. Hua said the happening at Pangong lake had \u201cviolated the consensus\u201d on border issues.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She said China had expressed \u201cgrave dissatisfaction\u201d and lodged its serious concern with India.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>China wants to go back to \u20181959 LAC\u2019:\u00a0 Context Following last week\u2019s scuffle between troops of the two countries along the Pangong lake in Ladakh, China on Monday urged India to abide by the Line of Actual Control (LAC) position of 1959.
