{"id":35532,"date":"2018-10-31T18:01:21","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T12:31:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=35532"},"modified":"2018-10-31T18:01:21","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T12:31:21","slug":"neighbours-wary-as-doklam-crisis-drags-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/neighbours-wary-as-doklam-crisis-drags-on\/","title":{"rendered":"Neighbours wary as Doklam crisis drags on"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/international\/doklam-crisis-echoes-loudly-in-south-and-south-east-asia\/article19518534.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neighbours wary as Doklam crisis drags on<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Context<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Nepal to the Philippines, countries in South and South-East Asia are keenly observing the Doklam crisis, wary of taking sides, but also keeping a close eye on subtle power shifts that the unfolding crisis embroiling China and India may reveal.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Different sides taken by different countries<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During a visit to Islamabad by China\u2019s Vice Premier, Wang Yang, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Pakistan\u2019s Independence, the Pakistani side backed all positions adopted by China, ranging from Doklam to the South China Sea (SCS).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japan became the first G-7 country to support India\u2019s position on the Doklam issue.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In New Delhi, Japan\u2019s Ambassador to India Kenji Hiramatsu acknowledged that the Doklam area \u201cis disputed between China and Bhutan,\u201d countering Beijing\u2019s claim that the stand-off was taking place on Chinese sovereign territory.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nepal, sharing common borders with India and China, has expressed neutrality on the Doklam standoff, and called for a diplomatic and peaceful solution to the crisis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in the Asia-Pacific, the Doklam face-off is being conflated with regional contests between China and several members of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), including the SCS.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rising tensions in Doklam may have perpetrators on both sides of the fence, but for many in East Asia it underscores the fact that China is embroiled in multiple territorial disputes across the Eurasian landmass and rim land.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post (SCMP), quoted foreign policy specialists is reporting that the protracted border dispute between China and India in the Himalayas \u201chas created a \u2018spillover effect\u2019 as China\u2019s neighbours become unsettled by its tough handling of the escalating conflict between the two Asian giants.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s standing up to China can only be a boon for South-East Asian countries even when they don\u2019t say so openly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any major power keeping China in check can only yield geopolitical benefits to South-East Asia as the region is wary of China\u2019s growing assertiveness.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Neighbours wary as Doklam crisis drags on Context From Nepal to the Philippines, countries in South and South-East Asia are keenly observing the Doklam crisis, wary of taking sides, but also keeping a close eye on subtle power shifts that the unfolding crisis embroiling China and India may reveal.
