The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has revised attempt limits and eligibility rules<\/strong> for candidates already inducted into the civil services, as notified in the CSE Prelims 2026<\/strong> notification. Compared to earlier years, the changes provide clearer and more explicit guidelines<\/strong>, especially for officers of the IAS, IPS, IFS, and other Group \u2018A\u2019 Central Services<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

UPSC CSE 2026: Revised Rules Explained<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Candidates already appointed to IAS \/ IFS from an earlier CSE and still in service<\/strong><\/td>\n\n

  • Not permitted<\/strong> to appear in CSE-2026 at any stage.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Even if appointment happens after Prelims 2026<\/strong>, such candidates cannot write Mains or be considered for any service through CSE-2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Candidates already appointed to IPS from an earlier CSE<\/strong><\/td>\n\n
    \n
  • Allowed<\/strong> to appear in CSE-2026<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • However, they cannot be allocated IPS again<\/strong> under any circumstances<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Candidates allocated IPS \/ Group \u2018A\u2019 Central Services through CSE-2026<\/strong><\/td>\n\n

  • Eligible for one improvement attempt in CSE-2027<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • This is allowed only if they avail the one-time training exemption<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
CSE-2026 selectees who neither join training nor take training exemption<\/strong><\/td>\n\n

  • Their 2026 service allocation stands cancelled automatically<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Candidates appearing in CSE-2027 after availing training exemption<\/strong><\/td>\n\n

  • If a better service is secured in 2027<\/strong>, the candidate must choose between the 2026 and 2027 allocations<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • The unselected allocation is cancelled<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Candidates who appear in CSE-2027 but do not get any service<\/strong><\/td>\n\n

  • They are permitted to return and join their 2026 allotted service<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Candidates who do not join training for the finally chosen service (2026 \/ 2027)<\/strong><\/td>\n\n

  • Both service allocations are cancelled<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Candidates after using the one improvement attempt (CSE-2027)<\/strong><\/td>\n\n
