{"id":355910,"date":"2026-02-12T16:13:40","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T10:43:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=355910"},"modified":"2026-02-12T16:13:40","modified_gmt":"2026-02-12T10:43:40","slug":"new-telescopes-nlst-nlot-planned-for-ladakh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/new-telescopes-nlst-nlot-planned-for-ladakh\/","title":{"rendered":"New Telescopes NLST, NLOT Planned for Ladakh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>News: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this year\u2019s Union Budget, the government sanctioned two new telescopes and approved the upgradation of an existing telescope in Ladakh.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>About New Telescopes NLST, NLOT Planned for Ladakh<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government approved the <\/span><b>National Large Solar Telescope (NLST)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>National Large Optical\u2013Near Infrared Telescope (NLOT)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to study the Sun and the origins of the universe.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Nodal Agency: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Bengaluru<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is the nodal agency for the NLST and NLOT<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>About National Large Solar Telescope (NLST)<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Location: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will be built in the Merak region near Pangong Tso lake in Ladakh.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Purpose: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will help scientists study solar dynamics, magnetism, energetic solar events, and space-weather processes affecting Earth and national space assets.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Working Mechanism: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a 2-metre aperture solar telescope that will operate in visible and near-infrared wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Key Features:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will become India\u2019s third ground-based solar observatory.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is expected to be operational in 5\u20136 years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will support data from Aditya-L1.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>About National Large Optical\u2013Near Infrared Telescope (NLOT)<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>About: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a 13.7-metre segmented-mirror telescope to study exoplanets and the universe\u2019s origins.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Location: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will be built in Hanle, Ladakh.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Purpose: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will conduct research on exoplanets, stellar and galactic evolution, supernovae, and the origins of the universe.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Working Mechanism: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will use 90 smaller hexagonal mirror segments that act as one large primary mirror and operate in optical-infrared wavelengths.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: In this year\u2019s Union Budget, the government sanctioned two new telescopes and approved the upgradation of an existing telescope in Ladakh.
