The real opportunity lies in solving basic development gaps. <strong>Seventy per cent of global food comes from low-productivity small farmers. 4.5 billion people lack essential healthcare. 739 million adults and 250 million children lack basic literacy.<\/strong> AI offers practical tools to address these deep welfare challenges. Platforms such as <strong>Aadhaar, UPI, DigiLocker, Bhashini, and DEPA<\/strong> allow fast scaling of <strong>identity, payments, data sharing, and service delivery<\/strong>. This <strong>integrated national architecture<\/strong> supports <strong>real-world AI use at population scale<\/strong>, which few countries can replicate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rapid growth in AI adoption and industry size: <\/strong>India\u2019s technology sector is projected to cross <strong>USD 280 billion<\/strong> in annual revenue. Over <strong>6 million people<\/strong> are employed in the tech and AI ecosystem. Around <strong>87% of enterprises<\/strong> actively use AI solutions, with strong adoption in <strong>BFSI, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, and automotive<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Expanding startup and developer ecosystem:<\/strong> India hosts around <strong>8 lakh startups<\/strong>, and nearly <strong>89% of new startups<\/strong>launched last year used AI in their products or services. The country has <strong>1,800+ Global Capability Centres<\/strong>, including <strong>500+ AI-focused centres<\/strong>. India is also the <strong>second-largest contributor<\/strong> to AI projects on <strong>GitHub<\/strong>, showing strong developer participation.<\/li>\n<li><strong> Global recognition and competitiveness: <\/strong>India ranks among the <strong>top four countries<\/strong> in AI skills and policy readiness and stands <strong>third globally<\/strong> in AI competitiveness. This reflects <strong>talent depth, research output, startup activity, and digital infrastructure<\/strong>, but the strength remains <strong>skewed towards deployment rather than core model building<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>India\u2019s Potential to Use AI<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> AI for Agriculture:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Improving smallholder productivity: <\/strong>Most of the world\u2019s food comes from small farmers with low productivity. AI tools can improve yield, reduce costs, and increase income.<\/li>\n<li><strong> Kisan E-Mitra chatbot: <\/strong>The national chatbot handles <strong>20,000 queries daily in 11 regional languages.<\/strong> It supports farmers at scale.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Saagu Baagu project in Telangana: <\/strong>The AI-led project <strong>doubled chilli farmers\u2019 earnings.<\/strong> It increased yield, reduced pesticide and fertiliser use, and improved sale prices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> AI for Healthcare Access<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Severe doctor shortage: <\/strong>India\u2019s doctor-to-patient ratio in public hospitals is <strong>1:11,000.<\/strong> This creates a huge access gap.<\/li>\n<li><strong>eSanjeevani telemedicine platform: <\/strong>By mid-2025, it conducted <strong>389 million virtual consultations.<\/strong> It expanded access without physical infrastructure.<\/li>\n<li><strong>AI-based disease detection: <\/strong>Qure.ai\u2019s TB detection algorithms have reached millions. AI supports diagnosis at scale.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong> AI for Human Capital and Skills<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><strong> Large but under-skilled workforce: <\/strong>India has <strong>950 million workers, but only 5% have formal skill training.<\/strong> Skill building is a major challenge.<\/li>\n<li><strong>FutureSkills PRIME: <\/strong>The programme enrolled <strong>1.6 million learners. 41% are women and 85% are from Tier II and Tier III cities.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>DIKSHA platform: <\/strong>It reached <strong>275 million users with 70% rural penetration.<\/strong> AI can democratise learning across regions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Structural Issues in India\u2019s AI Road<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Digital divide and gender gap: <\/strong>Only <strong>24% of rural households have internet access compared to 66% in urban areas.<\/strong> India is near the bottom in digital gender parity among 125 countries studied.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Energy and infrastructure stress: <\/strong>Weak grid reliability and transmission capacity will face more pressure due to AI\u2019s growing energy demand.<\/li>\n<li><strong> Talent shortage in AI roles: <\/strong>For every <strong>10 AI roles, only one qualified engineer is available.<\/strong> Talent is limited.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Dependence on foreign supply chains: <\/strong>India imports <strong>over 90% of semiconductor chips.<\/strong> The US\u2013China rivalry has fragmented the global tech system.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong>Weak data and regulatory systems: <\/strong>India lacks high-quality annotated datasets, especially in regional languages. Complex customs and varying state rules slow innovation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Funding and physical infrastructure gaps: <\/strong>Late-stage startups lack scale funding and rely on foreign capital after Series B. Traffic congestion and fragmented operations increase costs.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Initiatives taken to strengthen India\u2019s AI strategy<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>IndiaAI Mission:<\/strong> The government launched the IndiaAI Mission in March 2024 with over \u20b910,300 crore to build a strong indigenous AI ecosystem. It aims to democratise AI technology, improve data quality, and boost competitiveness.<\/li>\n<li><strong>INDIAai National Portal:<\/strong> INDIAai is India\u2019s national AI portal supporting knowledge sharing, research insights, industry news and resources to connect stakeholders across the ecosystem.<\/li>\n<li><strong>AI Governance Guidelines:<\/strong> Government has rolled out governance guidelines under IndiaAI that aim to make AI safe, inclusive and pro-innovation without heavy regulation that stifles growth.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Centres of Excellence (CoEs):<\/strong>The government set up <strong>three CoEs<\/strong> in <strong>Healthcare, Agriculture, and Sustainable Cities<\/strong>, and announced a <strong>fourth CoE for Education<\/strong> in <strong>Budget 2025<\/strong>, to support collaborative and scalable AI innovation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sarvam AI and BharatGen Models:<\/strong> Initiatives like Sarvam AI (for smarter public services) and BharatGen AI (multilingual, multimodal model) focus on homegrown capabilities that reflect India\u2019s linguistic and cultural diversity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>AI Impact Summit 2026: <\/strong>India will host the AI Impact Summit to showcase its AI capabilities, encourage innovation and build international collaborations.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>India represents a fourth path beyond the US\u2013China\u2013EU model. AI leadership should be measured by <strong>higher farm productivity, better healthcare access, and improved literacy.<\/strong> The goal is not AI for power, but AI for people.
