{"id":35643,"date":"2018-11-01T11:14:05","date_gmt":"2018-11-01T05:44:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=35643"},"modified":"2018-11-01T11:14:05","modified_gmt":"2018-11-01T05:44:05","slug":"ai-shows-interest-in-overhauling-defence-planes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/ai-shows-interest-in-overhauling-defence-planes\/","title":{"rendered":"AI shows interest in overhauling defence planes:\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-business\/ai-shows-interest-in-overhauling-defence-planes\/article19505802.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI shows interest in overhauling defence planes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Civil Aviation Ministry has written to the Defence Ministry asking them to facilitate the servicing of defence aircraft at Air India\u2019s Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul(MRO) facilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Introduction:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Air India\u2019s MRO unit, Air India Engineering Services Limited (AIESL) presently carries out MRO activities for commercial aircraft of various Boeing and Airbus.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hese facilities are based in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram, Nagpur, and Kolkata.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Key points:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the beginning of this year, AIESL had applied for a bid to service Indian Air Force\u2019s IL-78 mid-air refueller aircraft and four Embraer-135 aircraft.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the bids were rejected because AIESL does \u00a0not possess mandatory authorization certification required to be obtained for servicing these planes from the Russian-based OEMs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AIESL chief executive officer H.R. Jagannath said \u201cunder the Make-in India scheme, these aircraft should be maintained in India and by doing so, India can save a lot of foreign exchange\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting the maintenance manual details from OEMs was essential for maintaining any aircraft.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>CAG report:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Comptroller and Auditor General(CAG), \u00a0in its report in last month, had pointed out to \u201cseveral loopholes in infrastructure facilities and maintenance and repair of the existing IL fleet\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The audit report highlighted that India had only one hangar for 14 IL-76 aircraft and one for six IL-78 planes, which are due for overhaul in 2018-19.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report pointed out that due to non-availability of hangars, the costly air assets remained in the open which seriously affected their serviceability and life.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AI shows interest in overhauling defence planes:\u00a0 Context: The Civil Aviation Ministry has written to the Defence Ministry asking them to facilitate the servicing of defence aircraft at Air India\u2019s Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul(MRO) facilities.
