S. Rao<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Archaeological Survey of India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Estimated Age<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Radiocarbon dating indicates that settlement at Bhirrana <\/span><b>dates back nearly 8,000 years.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Evolutionary Phases (Bhirrana)- <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cultural development at Bhirrana is divided into four successive phases showing gradual settlement growth.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Period-IA (Hakra Wares Culture):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This phase shows well-plastered subterranean dwelling pits dug into natural soil, along with a ceramic assemblage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Period-IB (Early Harappan):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> During this phase, houses were built with mud bricks, and pottery showed six fabrics similar to Kalibanga-I.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Period-IIA (Early Mature Harappan):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This phase shows transformation in the city layout, and the settlement was enclosed by a mud-brick fortification wall.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Period-IIB (Mature Harappan):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This final phase shows typical Harappan antiquities, including steatite seals and associated pottery.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Key Findings<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Material culture and artefacts: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antiquities include beads of semiprecious stones, terracotta objects, copper bangles, and bone objects.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Settlement and cultural sequence: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excavations revealed a 4.20-metre thick deposit showing a four-fold cultural sequence.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News- Researchers using radiocarbon dating at Bhirrana indicate that the Harappan Civilisation of the Indian subcontinent could be over 8,000 years old.
