{"id":35653,"date":"2018-11-01T11:15:17","date_gmt":"2018-11-01T05:45:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=35653"},"modified":"2018-11-01T11:15:17","modified_gmt":"2018-11-01T05:45:17","slug":"assam-manipur-can-now-decide-on-afspa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/assam-manipur-can-now-decide-on-afspa\/","title":{"rendered":"Assam, Manipur can now decide on AFSPA:\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/assam-manipur-can-now-decide-on-afspa\/article19499966.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assam, Manipur can now decide on AFSPA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Union Home Ministry is set to give up its power to impose the \u2018disturbed areas\u2019 tag on Assam and Manipur.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Getting free from the tag<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The States are competent to decide whether they want to continue with it in entirety or impose it in a few pockets where disturbance is expected, sources said.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both the States ruled by the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) will be freed from the tag effectively.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It means that it will be the States\u2019 decision to either continue the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) or revoke it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It would be the first time since 1990, when the AFSPA was first invoked in Assam that the Centre would give up its power to continue or discontinue it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per Section 3 of the AFSPA, it can be invoked in places where \u201cthe use of armed forces in aid of the civil power is necessary.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The AFSPA vests the Army and Central forces deployed in \u201cdisturbed areas\u201d to kill anyone breaking the law and arrest and search any premises without warrant and shield the forces from prosecution.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The States are competent to decide whether they want to continue with it in entirety or impose it in a few pockets where disturbance is expected<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Assam, Manipur can now decide on AFSPA:\u00a0 Context The Union Home Ministry is set to give up its power to impose the \u2018disturbed areas\u2019 tag on Assam and Manipur.
