{"id":356627,"date":"2026-02-23T16:19:21","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T10:49:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=356627"},"modified":"2026-02-23T16:19:21","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T10:49:21","slug":"merchandise-trade-indices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/merchandise-trade-indices\/","title":{"rendered":"Merchandise Trade Indices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>N<\/strong><b>ews- <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s Merchandise Trade Indices have been revised with a new base year FY 2022\u201323 to reflect structural changes in trade patterns.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>About Merchandise Trade Indices<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Merchandise Trade Indices measure changes in the unit values and quantities of India\u2019s exports and imports over time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Published by: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is compiled and published by the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCI&amp;S), Ministry of Commerce &amp; Industry.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Purpose<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It measures changes in the unit values and quantities of India\u2019s exports and imports.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It indicates external sector price movements and supports economic analysis and national accounts compilation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Usage<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Government institutions use these indices for <\/span><b>economic analysis and policy formulation.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The National Accounts Division uses them as <\/span><b>deflators for estimating real exports and imports.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Reserve Bank of India uses them for <\/span><b>external sector and balance of payments analysis.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ministries, research organisations, and analysts use them for <\/span><b>trade policy review and empirical research.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Base Year: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The base year has been <\/span><b>revised from FY 2012\u201313 to FY 2022\u201323 (2022\u201323 = 100).<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Revision Committee: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The revision was recommended by a committee constituted by DGCI&amp;S under the chairmanship of Prof. Nachiketa Chattopadhyay, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Indices Compiled<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The revised series includes <\/span><b>monthly, quarterly and annual export and import unit value indices.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It includes trade indices <\/span><b>classified by Principal Commodity, Standard International Trade Classification (SITC), and Broad Economic Categories (BEC).<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It includes <\/span><b>bilateral and region-wise trade indices<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><b>India\u2019s top 20 export and import partner nations.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>It includes Terms of Trade indices (Net, Gross and Income Terms of Trade).<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Improved Methodology<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Methodological refinements have been introduced in the selection of the common commodity basket and in the treatment of missing unit values, as explained in the committee report.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News- India\u2019s Merchandise Trade Indices have been revised with a new base year FY 2022\u201323 to reflect structural changes in trade patterns.
