ResearchGate<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Origin:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It rises south of a prominent E-W ridgeline midway <strong>between the western Dhaulagiri Himalaya and the Mahabharat Range<\/strong> in Nepal at an elevation of about 3048 m.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Course of river: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initially, the river<strong> flows westward for nearly 100 km due to the Dundwa Range,<\/strong> a subrange of the Shiwalik Hills. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After bypassing this natural barrier, <strong>it resumes its southward course towards the Ganga Basin.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After <strong>flowing through Nepal, it enters Eastern Uttar Pradesh.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Basin topography:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The entire <strong>basin&#8217;s topography<\/strong> is made<strong> up of lofty mountains, inner and outer Tarai, and undulating plain regions.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Climate: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rapti River basin <strong>has two climatic zones-<\/strong><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a <strong>temperate climate<\/strong> in the <strong>Himalayan highlands<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a <strong>subtropical climate<\/strong> in the<strong> plains<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Major Tributaries: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burhi Rapti, Banganga, <\/span><b>Suav Nala,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ami, Rohini, Taraina, Tura, Bhakla, Parasi and Sikri, etc.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has<\/span><b> directed the Uttar Pradesh government to restore the Suav\u2019s status from \u201cnullah\u201d (drain) to \u201criver<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d in official revenue records and the gazetteer.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tributary of:<\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapti River is an important <strong>left bank tributary of the Ghaghra River.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Wildlife:<\/strong> The river supports rich biodiversity, including<\/span><b> <\/b><strong>Indian Skimmer, Sarus Crane, Lesser Adjutant, River Tern, <\/strong><b>Gangetic dolphin, mugger, gharial, and many species of water-dependent birds.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Religious significance:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The ancient<strong> Buddhist pilgrimage site Shravasti, with the remains of Saheth-Maheth, lies on the banks of the Rapti,<\/strong> where Gautama Buddha spent much of his monastic life.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rapti River, also known as \u201c<strong>Airavati\u201d in ancient texts, is considered one of the sacred rivers associated with Hindu and Buddhist traditions<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The NGT\u00a0has ordered the Uttar Pradesh government to amend official records and restore the Suav\u2019s classification from a \u201cdrain\u201d to a \u201criver\u201d in revenue records and the gazetteer, warning that non-compliance may lead to legal punishment.
