NewsOnAir<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Kerala as Keralam<\/strong> refers to the <strong>proposal to officially change the constitutional name of the State from Kerala<\/strong> to its Malayalam name, <strong>Keralam<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Historical context<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ancient Origin:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The earliest reference to the region appears in <strong>Rock Edict II of Emperor Ashoka in 257 BCE<\/strong> as \u201cKeralaputra,\u201d which is <strong>linked to the Chera dynasty. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The term Keralam <strong>evolved from Cheram or Cheralam, <\/strong>where <strong>cher<\/strong> means to join and <strong>alam<\/strong> means <strong>land or region<\/strong>, indicating an integrated land.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Era of freedom struggle<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>During the national independence struggle, there was a strong demand for the <strong>formation of a unified State for Malayalam-speaking people. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>This political demand later developed into <strong>the Aikya Kerala movement for unification<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>State Formation: <\/strong>The State Reorganisation Commission recommended creation of Kerala based on <strong>linguistic identity<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Kerala was <strong>officially formed on 1 November 1956,<\/strong> which is celebrated as <strong>Kerala Piravi Day.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Constitutional naming: <\/strong>Despite linguistic origins, the <strong>Constitution recorded the name Kerala instead of Keralam. <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Kerala Assembly later requested correction<\/strong> of the constitutional name to reflect linguistic identity and historical continuity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Constitutional basis<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Article 3<\/strong> of the Constitution <strong>empowers Parliament to alter the name of any existing State by law<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>First Schedule of the Constitution <\/strong>contains the names and territorial boundaries of States and Union Territories.<\/li>\n<li>The name change <strong>requires amendment of the First Schedule after parliamentary approval <\/strong>and Presidential assent.<\/li>\n<li>The Bill can be <strong>introduced in Parliament only<\/strong> with the <strong>prior recommendation of the President.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>State Legislature is consulted, but Parliament is not bound by its views.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The Bill requires a <strong>simple majority in Parliament<\/strong> and is <strong>not treated as a constitutional amendment under Article 368.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Procedure followed<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>State resolution:<\/strong> The Kerala Legislative Assembly passed a resolution in June 2024 <strong>requesting the Central Government to change the State\u2019s name from Kerala to Keralam.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Cabinet approval:<\/strong> The Union Cabinet approved the proposal and cleared the <strong>Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026<\/strong> for further constitutional process.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Presidential reference:<\/strong> The <strong>President will refer<\/strong> the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026 to the <strong>Kerala Legislative Assembly for its views<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Parliamentary passage:<\/strong> After receiving the Assembly\u2019s views, the Bill will be <strong>introduced in Parliament with the President\u2019s recommendation<\/strong> and passed by <strong>simple majority<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Amendment:<\/strong> After passage and Presidential assent, the <strong>First Schedule will be amended,<\/strong> and the new name <strong>Keralam will become legally valid<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The Union Cabinet approved the proposal to rename Kerala as Keralam and initiated the constitutional process through the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026.
