{"id":3572,"date":"2017-07-03T16:40:33","date_gmt":"2017-07-03T11:10:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=3572"},"modified":"2017-07-05T16:56:08","modified_gmt":"2017-07-05T11:26:08","slug":"association-southeast-asian-nations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/association-southeast-asian-nations\/","title":{"rendered":"The\u00a0Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key Highlights<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0Association of Southeast Asian Nations is a\u00a0regional intergovernmental organization\u00a0encompassing ten\u00a0Southeast Asian\u00a0states to promote the intergovernmental cooperation in various sectors such as economic, political, military, educational and cultural integration amongst its members and\u00a0Asian states.<\/li>\n<li>Since its inception on 8 August 1967 by\u00a0Indonesia,\u00a0Malaysia, the\u00a0Philippines,\u00a0Singapore, and\u00a0Thailand, the organization\u2019s membership has expanded to include\u00a0Brunei,\u00a0Cambodia,\u00a0Laos,\u00a0Myanmar, and\u00a0Vietnam.<\/li>\n<li>Its principal objectives include accelerating\u00a0economic growth,\u00a0social progress, and\u00a0sociocultural evolution\u00a0among its members, alongside the protection of regional stability and the provision of a mechanism for member countries to resolve differences peacefully.<\/li>\n<li>ASEAN covers a land area of 4.4\u00a0million square kilometers, 3% of the total\u00a0land\u00a0area of Earth.<\/li>\n<li>ASEAN territorial waters cover an area about three times larger than its land counterpart. Member countries have a combined population of approximately 625 million people, 8.8% of the world&#8217;s population.<\/li>\n<li>In 2015, the organization\u2019s combined\u00a0nominal GDP\u00a0had grown to more than US$2.8\u00a0trillion. If ASEAN were a single entity, it would rank as the sixth largest economy in the world, behind the USA, China, Japan, India and Germany.<\/li>\n<li>ASEAN shares land borders with\u00a0India,\u00a0China,\u00a0Bangladesh,\u00a0East Timor, and\u00a0Papua New Guinea, and maritime borders with India, China,\u00a0Palau, and\u00a0Australia.<\/li>\n<li>Both East Timor and Papua New Guinea are backed by certain ASEAN members for their membership in the organization.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Objectives of ASEAN<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To accelerate economic growth, social progress, and cultural development in the region.<\/li>\n<li>To promote regional peace and stability.<\/li>\n<li>To promote collaboration and mutual assistance on matters of common interest.<\/li>\n<li>To provide assistance to each other in the form of training and research facilities.<\/li>\n<li>To collaborate for the better utilization of agriculture and industry to raise the living standards of the people.<\/li>\n<li>To promote\u00a0Southeast Asian studies.<\/li>\n<li>To maintain close, beneficial co-operation with existing international organizations with similar aims and purposes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Criticism<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Critics have charged ASEAN as too soft in its approach to promoting human rights and democracy, particularly in junta-led Burma. Some scholar\u2019s claimed that non-interference has hindered ASEAN efforts to handle the problems of Myanmar, human rights abuse, and haze pollution in the area.<\/li>\n<li>ASEAN has also failed to abolish human rights violations in\u00a0West Papua, including Irian Jaya, committed by Indonesian military officials and political authorities. It is estimated that more than 500,000 indigenous Papuans have been killed in the name of Indonesian nationalism by Indonesian authorities.<\/li>\n<li>There are also several\u00a0territorial disputes\u00a0between ASEAN members that affecting the unity between ASEAN nations such as the\u00a0Cambodian\u2013Thai border dispute\u00a0(Khao Phra Wihan National Park) and the\u00a0continuous claim over parts of Malaysia\u00a0by certain politicians in the Philippines, who also seems supporting\u00a0militants raids\u00a0over neighboring country.<\/li>\n<li>Besides that, the biggest criticism ASEAN currently facing is the tensions caused by the\u00a0South China Sea dispute, which involves the following four member states: the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Brunei.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Key Highlights The\u00a0Association of Southeast Asian Nations is a\u00a0regional intergovernmental organization\u00a0encompassing ten\u00a0Southeast Asian\u00a0states to promote the intergovernmental cooperation in various sectors such as economic, political, military, educational and cultural integration amongst its members and\u00a0Asian states.
