{"id":357359,"date":"2026-03-07T16:00:41","date_gmt":"2026-03-07T10:30:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=357359"},"modified":"2026-03-07T16:00:41","modified_gmt":"2026-03-07T10:30:41","slug":"sharavathi-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/sharavathi-river\/","title":{"rendered":"Sharavathi River\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>News: <\/strong>Karnataka High Court recently issued notices to the Centre and the State government on a PIL questioning the legality of approvals granted by the State Wildlife Board and the National Board for Wildlife\u2019s Standing Committee for the Sharavathi Pumped Storage Project.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">About Sharavathi River<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 461px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sandrp.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/sharavathy150411.jpg?resize=461%2C381&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Sharavathi River\" width=\"461\" height=\"381\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: SANDRP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Location:<\/strong> It flows through the<strong> districts of Uttara Kannada and Shimoga<\/strong> in<strong>\u00a0Karnataka<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">This river is one of <strong>west flowing river in India.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Origin:<\/strong> It originates from <strong>Ambutirtha<\/strong> in the <strong>Tirthalli region<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Course of river:<\/strong> After flowing through Tirthalli region, it <strong>finally joins the Arabian sea<\/strong> at Karki in <strong>Honavar district of Karnataka<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>During its course, it forms the<strong> Jog Falls <\/strong>which is <strong>one of India\u2019s highest waterfalls.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Tributaries:<\/strong> Nandihole, Hilkunjihole, Sharmanavathi, Hilkunjihole, Nagodi hole, Hurlihole, Yennehole, Mavinahole, Gundabalahole, Kalkattehole, and Kandodihole.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Catchment area:<\/strong> About 3042 sq. km.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dams situated on the river<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">It plays a major role in Karnataka\u2019s hydropower generation, particularly through the<strong> Linganamakki Dam and associated projects.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Sharavathi Pumped Storage Project (PSP) is a 2,000 MW hydropower project<\/strong> on the Sharavathi river.
