Over the past decade, India has adopted a <strong>women-centric development approach<\/strong>, focusing on improving women\u2019s access to <strong>skills, credit, markets, technology and financial services<\/strong> through various targeted schemes.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Key Interventions for Women\u2019s Economic Advancement<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>1. Financial Security for the Girl Child<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY)<\/strong> was launched in 2015 under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign to encourage savings for the education and future needs of the girl child.<\/li>\n<li>The scheme provides an <strong>interest rate of 8.2% per annum with tax benefits under Section 80C<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Deposits can be made from <strong>\u20b9250 up to \u20b91.5 lakh annually<\/strong>, and the account matures after <strong>21 years<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>As of <strong>December 2025, total deposits exceeded \u20b93.33 lakh crore<\/strong>, promoting long-term financial security for girls.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>2. Rural Livelihoods and Collective Empowerment<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana \u2013 National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM)<\/strong> mobilises rural women into Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and provides <strong>credit, skill training and enterprise support<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Over <strong>10.05 crore women have been organised into 90.9 lakh SHGs<\/strong>, forming one of the world\u2019s largest women-led community networks.<\/li>\n<li>The scheme also deploys <strong>Bank Sakhis, Krishi Sakhis and Pashu Sakhis<\/strong> to strengthen financial access and agricultural productivity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Start-up Village Entrepreneurship Programme (SVEP)<\/strong> has supported <strong>5.88 lakh rural enterprises<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>3. Technology-led Empowerment<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>NaMo Drone Didi Yojana<\/strong> equips women SHGs with drones for agricultural services such as spraying fertilisers and pesticides.<\/li>\n<li>The scheme provides <strong>80% central financial assistance up to \u20b98 lakh<\/strong> and specialised training for drone operation and maintenance.<\/li>\n<li>It improves farm productivity while creating <strong>new income opportunities for rural women<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>4. Promotion of Women Entrepreneurship<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Lakhpati Didi Scheme<\/strong> aims to ensure that SHG members earn <strong>over \u20b91 lakh annually through sustainable livelihood activities<\/strong>, with a target of <strong>6 crore Lakhpati Didis<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>SHE-Mart<\/strong>, announced in the Union Budget 2026-27, will establish <strong>community-owned retail outlets in every district<\/strong> to market products made by women SHGs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Womaniya Initiative under Government e-Marketplace (GeM)<\/strong> promotes women-led enterprises in public procurement, with <strong>over 2 lakh women-led MSEs registered and orders worth more than \u20b980,000 crore secured<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>5. Financial Inclusion and Credit Support<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY)<\/strong> provides <strong>collateral-free loans up to \u20b920 lakh<\/strong>, enabling women to start or expand micro-enterprises.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY)<\/strong> has enabled millions of women to open <strong>zero-balance bank accounts<\/strong>, facilitating direct benefit transfers and financial independence.<\/li>\n<li><strong>PM SVANidhi Scheme<\/strong> provides <strong>working capital loans to street vendors<\/strong>, including women, with interest subsidies and digital incentives.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stand-Up India Scheme<\/strong> provides <strong>loans from \u20b910 lakh to \u20b91 crore<\/strong> to women entrepreneurs to establish enterprises in manufacturing, services and trading sectors.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Challenges<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Low female labour force participation<\/strong> despite increasing financial inclusion.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Limited digital literacy and access to technology<\/strong> in rural areas.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Socio-cultural barriers and gender norms<\/strong> that restrict women\u2019s participation in economic activities.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Limited access to markets and value chains<\/strong> for women-led enterprises.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Credit access gaps and lack of collateral<\/strong> for women entrepreneurs.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Way Forward<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>The government should <strong>strengthen digital literacy and skill development programmes for women<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Greater emphasis should be placed on <strong>market linkages, value addition and supply chain integration for women-led enterprises<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Financial institutions should <strong>expand gender-sensitive credit policies and mentoring support<\/strong> for women entrepreneurs.<\/li>\n<li>There should be <strong>greater convergence between SHGs, digital platforms and government procurement systems<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Awareness campaigns should address <strong>social barriers and encourage women\u2019s participation in economic activities<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Conclusion: <\/strong>India\u2019s approach to women\u2019s empowerment has evolved from <strong>financial inclusion to entrepreneurship and leadership<\/strong>.
