tree is an<strong> evergreen tree <\/strong>of the\u00a0<strong>spurge family (Euphorbiaceae). <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Climatic and soil requirements<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>It <strong>grows best on hilltops or slopes,<\/strong> as good air-drainage reduces losses from spring frosts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rainfall:<\/strong> At least <strong>1,120 mm of rainfall<\/strong> evenly distributed through the year.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Temperature:<\/strong> Trees <strong>require 350 &#8211; 400 hours in winter<\/strong> with<strong> temperatures 7.2\u00b0c or lower.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Soil:\u00a0<\/strong>Soils must be <strong>well-drained, deep aerated,<\/strong> and <strong>have a high moisture-holding capacity<\/strong> to be easily penetrated by the roots.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fruit bearing:<\/strong> It begin bearing fruit the<strong> third year after planting<\/strong>, and are usually in <strong>commercial production <\/strong>by the<strong> fourth or fifth year.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Productive years:<\/strong> The trees typically remain\u00a0productive<strong>\u00a0for 24 years,<\/strong> reaching <strong>peak <\/strong>yields between<strong> 10 and 12 years of age. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Production:<\/strong> Tung oil yields generally range from <strong>300 to 450 kilograms per hectare,<\/strong> with the <strong>seed containing about 30-40% oil.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Geographical distribution: <\/b>It is cultivated in<b> China, Argentina, Paraguay, Africa, India and United States.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>Features of tung trees:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It can<strong> grow up to 9 m tall. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It has <strong>large leaves, lobed or unlobed, attractive white flowers<\/strong> with <strong>reddish centres, and apple-sized globular fruit.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Its <strong>leaves and seeds <\/strong>contain a <strong>toxic saponin.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Tung <strong>oil<\/strong> is extracted from its<strong> nutlike seeds.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>About Tung Oil<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Properties: <\/strong>It is <strong data-start=\"22\" data-end=\"109\">non-edible, antibacterial, weather-resistant, and possesses insecticidal properties<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use of oil for medicinal purposes: <\/strong>It\u00a0is <strong>emetic, antiphlogistic and vermifuge. <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The oil from the seed is <strong>used externally to treat parasitic skin diseases, burns, scalds and wounds.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other Uses:<\/strong> The seed contains up to<strong><strong>58% quick-drying oil<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\"> used to make <\/span><strong>lacquers, varnishes, paints, linoleum, resins, artificial leather, floor coverings, greases, and brake linings<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">. <\/span><\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Tung oil is also used to <\/span><strong>coat food, beverage, and medicine containers<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\"> and to <\/span><strong>insulate wires and metal parts in electronic equipment<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prospect in India:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Tung Plantation is done in <strong>north-eastern region<\/strong>, specially in <strong>Mizoram in India<\/strong> due to its favorable climatic conditions.<\/li>\n<li>India\u2019s <strong>current annual requirement for tung oil is around 400-500 MT<\/strong> but<strong> domestic production is negligible.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Its production is also<strong> being incentivize<\/strong> in the state under <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/national-mission-on-edible-oils-oilseeds-nmeo-oilseeds\/\">National Mission on Edible Oils- Oilseeds (NMEO-OS), 2024<\/a>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: In Mizoram,\u00a0over 600 farmers have joined the collective to promote tung tree cultivation and organized marketing.
