IE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>India\u2019s glass manufacturing industry produces glass products used in construction, automotive, packaging, electronics, and pharmaceutical sectors.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>All India Glass Manufacturers<\/strong><strong>\u2019 <\/strong><strong>Federation (AIGMF)<\/strong> represents the <strong>interests<\/strong> of the glass manufacturing industry and provides sector related data and policy inputs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Historical evolution<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ancient references:<\/strong> The Indian <strong>epic Mahabharata<\/strong> contains one of the earliest references to glassmaking in India.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Archaeological evidence:<\/strong> Glass beads from the <strong>Painted Grey Ware civilisation in the Ganges Valley<\/strong> around <strong>1000 BC<\/strong> provide early physical evidence.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Early production centres:<\/strong> Archaeological remains show glass industry activity in <strong>Brahmapuri and Kolhapur<\/strong> between 2 BC and 2 AD.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Medieval development:<\/strong> During the <strong>Mughal period<\/strong>, glassware such as hukkas, perfume containers, and decorative glass items became popular.\n<ul>\n<li>Historically, <strong>Firozabad<\/strong> is popularly known as the <strong>\u201cGlass City of India\u201d<\/strong>, where it started back by <strong>17th century<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Modern period<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Shri Ishwar Das Varshnei<\/strong> is considered the <strong>father of the Indian glass industry<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>He established the <strong>United Provinces Glass Works in Bahjoi, Uttar Pradesh, in 1916<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>He was a key figure in developing <strong>blown, pressed, and sheet glass<\/strong>, and was the <strong>first President of the Indian Ceramic Society<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>first glass plant<\/strong> was set up in <strong>august 1908<\/strong> by <strong>Lokmanya Balgangadhar Tilak at Talegaon, Maharashtra.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Current market scenario<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The float glass segment was estimated at <strong>Rs. 24,000 crore in 2022<\/strong> and is expected to <strong>reach Rs. 40,000 crore<\/strong> within <strong>four years<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Production capacity:<\/strong> India\u2019s glass manufacturing sector produces around <strong>26,000 tonnes of glass per day<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Container glass output:<\/strong> About <strong>12,500 tonnes of container glass<\/strong> are produced daily.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pharmaceutical glass:<\/strong> Around <strong>500 tonnes of ampoules, vials, and cartridges<\/strong> are produced daily for medicine storage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Domestic consumption:<\/strong> Nearly <strong>80% of the glass produced is consumed within the country<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Low domestic consumption: <\/strong>India\u2019s <strong>per capita float glass consumption<\/strong> is <strong>2.5 kg<\/strong>, which is <strong>lower<\/strong> than developed countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Potential<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Growing construction demand:<\/strong> The flourishing construction and housing sector is increasing demand for float glass used in windows, mirrors, doors, and solar panels.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Automotive and industrial demand:<\/strong> Increasing use of glass in the automotive and construction industries is supporting medium-term growth.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Solar energy expansion:<\/strong> Solar glass demand is expected to rise <strong>23\u2013<\/strong><strong>25% in FY24<\/strong> due to the government\u2019s focus on renewable energy and replacement of imported solar glass.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Large domestic growth scope:<\/strong> India\u2019s <strong>per capita float glass consumption is about 2.5 kg<\/strong>, while developed countries consume <strong>7\u201310 kg<\/strong>, indicating significant room for expansion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Challenges in present context<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fuel supply constraints:<\/strong> Curtailment of natural gas and LPG supply is affecting continuous furnace operations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>High restart cost: <\/strong>Restarting a furnace can take six to twelve months and cost Rs 50\u2013200 crore, making shutdowns extremely costly.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rising gas prices:<\/strong> Increasing gas prices due to supply shortages may make glass products <strong>commercially unviable<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Technology and skills gap:<\/strong> The sector requires advanced technologies and skilled workforce for modern production.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Geographical distribution &amp;
