{"id":35796,"date":"2018-11-01T11:50:04","date_gmt":"2018-11-01T06:20:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=35796"},"modified":"2018-11-01T11:50:04","modified_gmt":"2018-11-01T06:20:04","slug":"jaguar-jets-still-flying-without-autopilot-cag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/jaguar-jets-still-flying-without-autopilot-cag\/","title":{"rendered":"Jaguar jets still flying without autopilot: CAG:"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-national\/jaguar-jets-still-flying-without-autopilot-cag\/article19441398.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaguar jets still flying without autopilot: CAG<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the frontline fighters of the Indian Air Force, the Jaguars, is still flying without autopilots, an essential flying aid, the Comptroller and Auditor-General has said.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Background:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a report presented in Parliament on July 28, the CAG said that the flying aid capability envisaged by the IAF for the Jaguar aircraft in 1997 remains largely unrealized even after 20 years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1997, the IAF had projected a requirement of 108 autopilots for 108 aircraft but only 35 autopilots were contracted in August 1999 due to \u201cresource crunch\u201d at a cost of Rs 37.42 crore which were delivered between 2006 and 2008.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A repeat contract for 95 autopilots was concluded only by March 2014.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out of 35 autopilots procured earlier, only 18 could be integrated on the Jaguar aircraft as of March 2017.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>The integrated autopilots were also functioning sub-optimally due to malfunctioning of their vital component i.e Auto Pilot Electronic Unit(APEU)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Key points:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> An autopilot is a system used to control the trajectory of an aircraft without constant \u2018hands-on\u2019 control by a human operator being required.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It reduces the pilot\u2019s workload, enhances safety of aircraft and cuts aircraft accidents.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presently, IAF has a fleet of 130 Jaguars IM\/IS single-seat attack aircraft and 30 Jaguar IB two-seat trainers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 60 of these Jaguars will be modified to DARIN III standard by the state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and the rest will remain at DARIN II standard until they are retired.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Sub-optimal function:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out of 35 autopilots procured earlier, only 18 could be integrated on the Jaguar aircraft as of March 2017.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0The integral autopilots were also functioning sub-optimally due to malfunctioning of their vital component i.e Auto Pilot Electronic Unit (APEU), the report highlighted<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0In addition, 30 autopilots received through the repeat contract are yet to be integrated<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0As on October 2016, the IAF had a holding of 117 Jaguars, but only 18 could be upgraded with autopilot capability<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0These autopilots were working sub-optimally due to malfunctioning of their APEUs, the report added.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jaguar jets still flying without autopilot: CAG: Context: One of the frontline fighters of the Indian Air Force, the Jaguars, is still flying without autopilots, an essential flying aid, the Comptroller and Auditor-General has said.
