This has been possible with the support of women-centered policies like <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Beti Bachao Beti Padhao<\/span>, and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Jan Dhan Yojana<\/span> empowering them as decision-makers and changemakers.<br \/>\nWhile the turnout of women voters has increased over the years, campaign participation still shows a clear gender gap. The number increased to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">more than 6% in the Lok Sabha<\/span> held a decade later.<\/li>\n<li>However, the number <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">dipped to below 4% in 1971<span style=\"color: #333333;\">,<\/span> <\/span>ironically, with <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Indira Gandhi<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">India\u2019s first and only woman Prime Minister<\/span>, at the helm.<\/li>\n<li>There has been a slow, but steady rise in women\u2019s representation (with a few exceptions). The women representation crossed the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">10% mark in 2009<\/span> and peaked <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">at 14.36%<\/span> in 2019.<\/li>\n<li>Of the 74 women MPs elected in 2024, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">43 are first time MPs<\/span>. Women MPs have an average age of 50 years and are younger as compared to the overall age of the House, which is 56 years. State Legislative assembly representation: <\/strong>The representation of women in State Legislative Assemblies has been low. Comparison with Global Standards:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>According to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) \u2018<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Women in Parliament<\/span>\u2019 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Report<\/span> (2021), the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">global percentage of women<\/span> in parliament was <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">26.1%<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>India <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">ranks lower than 140 other nations<\/span> in terms of the number of women serving in their national legislatures.<\/li>\n<li>Even though the representation of women in Lok Sabha has increased post independence (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">~16% in 17th Lok Sabha<\/span>), India is <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">behind a number of countries of Africa and South Asia<\/span> (like Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a id=\"toc2\"><\/a>Why is there a need for greater political empowerment of Women in India?<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Accountability and Gender-sensitive Governance-<\/strong> Political empowerment of women facilitates <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">direct engagement in public decision-making<\/span> and is a means of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">ensuring better accountability to women<\/span>. It helps in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">undertaking reforms<\/span> that can help make <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">all elected officials more effective at promoting gender equality in public policy<\/span> and ensuring their implementation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Breaking the Patriarchal mould of Indian Politics- <\/strong>Indian Politics has been patriarchal with top party positions and positions of power have been occupied by male. Increase in women representation in parliament, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">dismantles the patriarchal nature<\/span> of Indian politics.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Focus on Gender Issues-<\/strong> According to UN Women, higher numbers of women in parliament generally contribute to stronger attention to women\u2019s issues. This ensures appropriate policy response to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">address gender issues<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">introduce women-sensitive measures<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gender Equality-<\/strong> Women\u2019s political participation is a<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> fundamental prerequisite<\/span> for gender equality and genuine democracy. It helps <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">establish public enquiries on women\u2019s issues<\/span> and use findings to place issues on<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> government agendas<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">within legislative programmes<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Change of Stereotypes-<\/strong> Enhanced representation helps in cooperation with the women\u2019s movement and the media to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">change the stereotyped image of women<\/span> as only \u2018<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">homemakers<\/span>\u2019, to change it to &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">lawmakers<\/span>&#8216;.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Improvement of Economic Performance and Infrastructure-<\/strong> According to UN University, Women legislators <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">improve the economic performance of their constituencies 1.8% more than male legislatures<\/span>. Evaluation of Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana shows the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">share of incomplete road projects is 22% lower in female<\/span> led constituencies.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a id=\"toc3\"><\/a>What are the reasons behind low political representation of women in India?<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Gender Gaps in Political Ambition-<\/strong> Gender conditioning leads to lack of political ambition in women:\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha;\">\n<li>Women are <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">less encouraged<\/span> to run for office\/election than men.<\/li>\n<li>Women\u2019s <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">tendency to shy away from competition<\/span> also plays a role since the political selection process is likely perceived as highly competitive.<\/li>\n<li>The fear of \u2018<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">big politics<\/span>\u2019 and factors such as <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">self-doubt<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">stereotypes<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">personal reservations<\/span> prevent even the most politically gifted women from entering government<\/li>\n<li>Women\u2019s <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">willingness to advance in their political careers<\/span> can also be influenced by family and relational considerations. <strong>For ex-<\/strong> In Sweden, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">female politicians who are promoted to mayor<\/span> (i.e. the highest office in municipal politics) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">experience a significant increase<\/span> in the likelihood of divorcing their partner, whereas this is not the case for men.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Patriarchal Society- <\/strong>The patriarchal nature of Indian politics also prevents the increase in women participation in India:\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha;\">\n<li><strong>Gender Disparities-<\/strong> There are still many obstacles in the way of women in positions of leadership due to gender inequality in areas like as <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">education<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">access to resources<\/span>, and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">the persistence of biased views<span style=\"color: #333333;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Sexual division of labour-<\/strong> Women are responsible for the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">majority of housework and child care<\/span>. This creates hindrance for them to enter politics.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cultural and Social Expectations-<\/strong> Cultural and Social Expectations are <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">forced upon women<\/span> which prevent women from participating in politics.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cost of Contesting Election-<\/strong> Cost of contesting elections is rising with times. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Lack of access to resources and assets<\/span> means that women are much less likely to be able to raise the funds for contesting elections than men.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Male politicians as Gate-keepers-<\/strong> Party leaders generally <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">prefer to promote male rather than female candidates<\/span>.
