{"id":358147,"date":"2026-03-14T12:18:56","date_gmt":"2026-03-14T06:48:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=358147"},"modified":"2026-03-14T12:18:56","modified_gmt":"2026-03-14T06:48:56","slug":"maritime-labour-convention-mlc-2006","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/maritime-labour-convention-mlc-2006\/","title":{"rendered":"Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>News:<\/strong> The war in West Asia is throwing light on the risks faced by commercial sailors, especially Indians, in spite of being covered under the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), 2006.<\/p>\n<h2>About Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_358148\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-358148\" style=\"width: 368px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-358148\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Source-ILO.jpg?resize=368%2C194&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006\" width=\"368\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Source-ILO.jpg?resize=300%2C158&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Source-ILO.jpg?w=654&amp;ssl=1 654w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-358148\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source &#8211; ILO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>The Maritime Labour Convention (<strong>MLC<\/strong>) is an <strong>International Labour Organization convention.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>established in 2006<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>came into force on 20 August 2013.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is a <strong>binding<\/strong> international law.<\/li>\n<li>It sets out in one place <strong>minimum requirements for how a seafarer should be treated.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Many states that ratify the Convention <strong>may have higher standards<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Need:<\/strong> It was <strong>introduced<\/strong> in recognition that the global <strong>nature of the shipping industry<\/strong> means that <strong>seafarers need special protection<\/strong>, especially since you can be exempted from national labour laws.<\/li>\n<li>The MLC incorporates and builds on <strong>68 existing maritime labour conventions<\/strong> and recommendations, as well as other fundamental principles, to <strong>ensure decent working and living conditions for all seafarers<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Importance<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is considered as the <strong>\u2018bill of rights\u2019 for the seafarers<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>It gives the seafarers\u00a0the <strong>right to a safe and secure workplace<\/strong> \u2013 where safety standards are complied with; and where they have fair terms of employment, decent living and working conditions, including social protection such as access to medical care, health protection and welfare.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Applies to:<\/strong> It <strong>applies to all commercial seagoing ships<\/strong> operating in <strong>international waters<\/strong> or <strong>between ports <\/strong>of different countries <strong>except<\/strong> <strong>fishing, naval and traditionally built vessels.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">It covers <strong>any seafarer who is employed, engaged or working in any capacity<\/strong> on board one of these vessels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">The MLC sits alongside International Maritime Organization (<strong>IMO) regulations<\/strong> which deal with the <strong>vessel and its operation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>India&#8217;s status:<\/strong> The convention has been <strong>ratified by India on 9th October, 2015.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The war in West Asia is throwing light on the risks faced by commercial sailors, especially Indians, in spite of being covered under the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), 2006.
