{"id":35836,"date":"2018-11-01T11:57:18","date_gmt":"2018-11-01T06:27:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=35836"},"modified":"2018-11-01T11:57:18","modified_gmt":"2018-11-01T06:27:18","slug":"is-india-a-good-neighbour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/is-india-a-good-neighbour\/","title":{"rendered":"Is India a good neighbour?:\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-opinion\/is-india-a-good-neighbour\/article19423130.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is India a good neighbour?<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s foreign policy of late has come under sharp public scrutiny especially the direction in which it is moving.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no single yardstick to measure foreign policy successes and failures but the absence of crises is broadly viewed as a sound criterion.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Sour relations<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India shares an extremely frosty relationship with Pakistan and on the other, the relationship of stability with China built over three decades has been falling apart despite increased diplomatic engagement.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Equation with China suffers not only because of Chinese mistakes but also because of the absence of innovative thinking in India to deal with its biggest neighbour.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India lacks a coherent means to contain China except for nurturing some myopic ideas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The old time-tested friendship with Russia has been allowed to slip through our fingers by downscaling the levels of engagements and limiting the areas of interest over time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tragedy is that China has shrewdly neutralised India\u2019s close proximity with Russia while at the same time sustaining its nexus with Pakistan.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Indian Foreign Policy<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian foreign policy relied on its deep resources of wisdom and inner strength based on a percept of it being a civilizational state, that was reflected in its international conduct.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To that effect, foreign policy has been driven by peace rather than security. It gives India a global persona of benign international influence.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Priority to security has distorted India\u2019s image vis-\u00e0-vis its neighbours, especially when policies are pursued through the precolonial security-centric \u201czero-sum\u201d or \u201cfrontier mindset\u201d or even from a Cold War political prism.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, this approach has failed to stop China\u2019s influence in India\u2019s neighbourhood despite the \u201cneighbourhood-first policy\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a clear lack of finesse in India\u2019s approach, more so when the world has moved away from a bilateral to a multilateral context.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A better option to probe future ties would be to return to the strategic fundamentals.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>India \u2013 China equation<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India might not see China as an object of disdain in perpetuity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An honest attempt to build a new paradigm of India-China trust grounded on the shared historical and cultural awareness, as also on the collective wisdom of ordinary citizens on both sides, may prove to be more effective.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For India to emerge as a global power of any reckoning, it has to realize that a narrow tactical pursuit devoid of strategic thinking will lead to nowhere.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India needs to reframe its terms of relationship with China; rethink its own posture; rescue it from experiencing a delusion of grandeur and instead persevere to emerge as a confident and aspiring regional power.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is India a good neighbour?:\u00a0 Context India\u2019s foreign policy of late has come under sharp public scrutiny especially the direction in which it is moving.
