SOU News<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>collaborative global effort<\/strong> under Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (<strong>CMS<\/strong>) to <strong>address the drivers of illegal and unsustainable taking<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Launched at:<\/strong> It is launched in <strong>March, 2026<\/strong> during the <strong>15th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) in Campo Grande, Brazil.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Aim:<\/strong>\u00a0The GTI <strong>aims<\/strong> to provide <strong>coordinated support to CMS parties<\/strong> and fill longstanding <strong>gaps<\/strong> in global conservation efforts, and is expected to equip countries with the tools, partnerships and knowledge required to safeguard migratory species from this growing threat.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Objectives and focus areas:<\/strong> It will focus on <strong>four key areas<\/strong> of work \u2013\n<ul>\n<li>Improve data and monitoring<\/li>\n<li>Strengthen legal and policy frameworks<\/li>\n<li>Enhance community engagement<\/li>\n<li>Raise awareness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Meaning of Illegal and\/or Unsustainable Taking:<\/strong> Illegal and\/or unsustainable taking refers to the <strong>removal of wild animals from nature in ways<\/strong> that are <strong>prohibited<\/strong> under the Convention and\/or <strong>exceed the level of taking<\/strong> that can be <strong>sustained by species populations<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Taking for <strong>domestic motivations<\/strong> can include hunting, fishing, trapping, or capturing migratory species for food, domestic sale, sport, medicine, rituals, or retaliation in human\u2013wildlife conflict.<\/li>\n<li>This form of taking is a <strong>major direct driver of biodiversity loss globally<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Launching partners:<\/strong> The initiative is being launched <strong>together with partner organizations<\/strong> whose work is directly relevant to addressing these challenges &#8211;
