{"id":359486,"date":"2026-03-31T16:15:58","date_gmt":"2026-03-31T10:45:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=359486"},"modified":"2026-03-31T16:15:58","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T10:45:58","slug":"myntdu-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/myntdu-river\/","title":{"rendered":"Myntdu River"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>News:<\/strong> The Liar Pamkam and Mynkrem tributaries of the Myntdu river have been severely damaged by rampant debris dumping during the construction of the Jowai bypass road.<\/p>\n<h2>About Myntdu River<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_359487\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-359487\" style=\"width: 427px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-359487\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Source-ScienceDirect.jpg?resize=427%2C312&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Myntdu River\" width=\"427\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Source-ScienceDirect.jpg?resize=300%2C219&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Source-ScienceDirect.jpg?resize=1024%2C747&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Source-ScienceDirect.jpg?resize=768%2C560&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Source-ScienceDirect.jpg?w=1114&amp;ssl=1 1114w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-359487\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source &#8211; ScienceDirect<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Origin:<\/strong> The Myntdu River originates in the <strong>Jaintia Hills District of Meghalaya<\/strong>, near the village of <strong>Mihmyntdu<\/strong>, approximately <strong>2 km from the district headquarters of Jowai.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>This river <strong>encircles Jowai on three sides<\/strong> excluding the northern part of town.<\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>locally known<\/strong> as <strong>&#8216;ka Tawiar ka Takan&#8217; (Our Guardian Angel) in the Pnar dialect.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is often described as the <strong>guardian and protector of the inhabitants of Jowai region.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Course:<\/strong> The river flows across <strong>Jowai<\/strong>, and then through <strong>Leshka<\/strong>, to reach the village Borghat, within <strong>Jaintia Hills,<\/strong> before finally <strong>entering Bangladesh<\/strong>, where it is <strong>locally called &#8216;Shari&#8217;<\/strong> (or \u2018<strong>Hari\u2019<\/strong>).\n<ul>\n<li>It ultimately joins the <strong>Surma-Meghna river system<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tributaries:<\/strong> The chief tributaries of the Myntdu River are <strong>Umshariang, Lamu and Lynriang River<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Umshariang<\/strong> coming from the <strong>west<\/strong> and <strong>Lamu<\/strong> coming from the <strong>east<\/strong> unite with the Myntdu River and form a <strong>tri-junction of three tributaries<\/strong> named as <strong>Leshka<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The Myntdu River after <strong>flowing southwards from Leshka joins<\/strong> its major <strong>tributary<\/strong> of the <strong>Lynriang River<\/strong> at a height of 335 m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Geology:<\/strong> The river traverses the <strong>denudational high and low hills of the Jaintia Hills<\/strong>, dominated by the <strong>Shella Formation of the Jaintia Group<\/strong>, which features alternating layers of <strong>sandstone and limestone.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Project:<\/strong> The prominent <strong>Myntdu Leshka Hydroelectric Project (Stage I) is a 126 MW (3 \u00d7 42 MW) run-of-the-river dam<\/strong> located at Leshka.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The Liar Pamkam and Mynkrem tributaries of the Myntdu river have been severely damaged by rampant debris dumping during the construction of the Jowai bypass road.
