{"id":35977,"date":"2018-11-01T12:48:26","date_gmt":"2018-11-01T07:18:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=35977"},"modified":"2018-11-01T12:48:26","modified_gmt":"2018-11-01T07:18:26","slug":"context-of-the-contest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/context-of-the-contest\/","title":{"rendered":"Context of the contest\u00a0: \u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-opinion\/context-of-the-contest\/article19361062.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Context of the contest<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(The Hindu, Editorial)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(The selection of President, camaraderie of the political class)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context :<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The election to the posts of President and Vice President is a moment when contested democracy gives way to broad agreement and the camaraderie of the political class.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Felicitation of new elected President<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On July 25, the newly elected President of India Ram Nath Kovind was sworn in at the Central Hall of Parliament.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The function was attended by Members of Parliament cutting across party lines and Chief Ministers who represented different political persuasions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Farewell to Outgoing President \u00a0:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier, last Sunday, a cross-section of MPs attended a touching farewell to outgoing President Pranab Mukherjee, a man associated with Indian parliamentary democracy since 1969.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choice of President: not unanimous<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all those who attended both functions had voted for either President Kovind or President Mukherjee.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unsuccessful candidates were included C.D. Deshmukh, H.R.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Khanna, K. Subba Rao, Tridib Chaudhuri, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and P.A. Sangma.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the mere fact that the presidency was contested didn\u2019t either diminish the office or ensure unending controversy over the person of the Head of State.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The respect and dignity of that office has always been maintained by all shades of political opinion.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Reasons :<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The holder of a constitutional office such as the President or Vice President is not expected to be another battering ram on behalf of the Prime Minister and the ruling dispensation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Head of State is expected to adhere to the letter of the Constitution.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only occasion the President can somewhat exercise his discretion is in selecting the Prime Minister in the event of a fractured election verdict.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Context of the contest\u00a0: \u00a0 (The Hindu, Editorial) (The selection of President, camaraderie of the political class) Context : The election to the posts of President and Vice President is a moment when contested democracy gives way to broad agreement and the camaraderie of the political class.
