{"id":35979,"date":"2018-11-01T12:49:18","date_gmt":"2018-11-01T07:19:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=35979"},"modified":"2018-11-01T12:49:18","modified_gmt":"2018-11-01T07:19:18","slug":"indias-concerns-slowing-rcep-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/indias-concerns-slowing-rcep-talks\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018India\u2019s concerns slowing RCEP talks\u2019\u00a0:"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-business\/indias-concerns-slowing-rcep-talks\/article19361046.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018India\u2019s concerns slowing RCEP talks\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(RCEP sluggish talks concerns India)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context :<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s reservations regarding the potential adverse impact of eliminating duties on its local manufacturing and job creation is understood to be slowing down the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) negotiations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>RCEP :<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The RCEP is a proposed mega Free Trade Agreement (FTA) involving 16 Asia Pacific nations including India and China.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The RCEP aims to liberalize investment norms in the region, besides boosting trade by dismantling most tariff and nontariff barriers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asia Pacific is a fast growing region, but trade between countries in the region is affected by several barriers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If RCEP talks are not concluded quickly and these barriers are not eliminated, the region will miss out on many opportunities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Rising concerns :<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian companies and industry bodies, including Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), flagged their concerns.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Centre\u2019s \u2018Make In India\u2019 initiative to boost manufacturing and job creation can get hit by a hurried pact.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post India\u2019s FTA with ASEAN, Japan and Korea, India\u2019s trade deficit with them have increased, and the government needs to take this into account during RCEP negotiations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliminating duties under the RCEP will impact many sectors including steel, aluminum, auto-components, many engineering items and readymade garments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India is ought to highlight the need for removal of non-tariff barriers including those in China.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2018India\u2019s concerns slowing RCEP talks\u2019\u00a0: (RCEP sluggish talks concerns India) Context : India\u2019s reservations regarding the potential adverse impact of eliminating duties on its local manufacturing and job creation is understood to be slowing down the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) negotiations.
