ECI<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It prohibits <strong>displaying any election matter by means, inter alia, of television or similar apparatus,<\/strong> in any polling area <strong>during the period of forty-eight hours (silence period)<\/strong> ending with the hour fixed for the conclusion of the poll for any election in that polling area.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Definition of &#8220;election matter&#8221;:<\/strong> \u201cElection matter\u201d has been defined <strong>as any matter intended or calculated to influence or affect the result of an election.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Provisions for electronic media during <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>the silence period:<\/strong> Electronic media platforms must ensure that their content does not include:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Views or appeals<\/strong> supporting any political party or candidate<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Discussions<\/strong> that may <strong>promote or harm electoral prospects<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Panellist or participant opinions<\/strong> that could influence voters, and <strong>any material capable of affecting election results<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Telecast or publish programmes predicting election results,<\/strong> including predictions by <strong>astrologers, tarot readers, or political analysts<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Displaying <strong>any results of opinion polls or any other poll surveys<\/strong>\u00a0during the silence period ending with the hour fixed for the conclusion of the poll for any election in that polling area.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Provisions <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>for conduct of Exit poll survey:<\/strong> It prohibits the <strong>conduct of Exit poll and the dissemination of their results <\/strong>by means of print<\/span> or electronic <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">media between the <strong>hour fixed for commencement of poll in the first phase and half an hour after the time fixed for close of poll for the last phase<\/strong> in all the States.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Provision related to approval for Broadcast Events:<\/strong> During periods not covered under the Act, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>TV, Radio, Cable, and FM channels may seek permission from State\/District\/Local authorities<\/strong> to conduct broadcast-related events.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such broadcasts must<strong> :<\/strong><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Follow the <strong>Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and Programme Code<\/strong> under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintain<strong> decency, communal harmony and neutrality<\/strong> in election-related matters.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Comply with Election Commission guidelines (<\/strong>27 August 2012) on paid news and related matters.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Permission is granted by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) or District Election Officer (DEO)<\/strong> after considering factors like law and order conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Provision related to telecast of Films:<\/strong> Telecast of feature films (excluding commercial advertisements) of contesting actors is <strong>not allowed on Doordarshan during the Model Code of Conduct period (as it<\/strong> operates on public funds), but\u00a0<strong data-start=\"201\" data-end=\"258\">is allowed on private TV channels and cinema theatres<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Penalty for violation:<\/strong> Violation of the provisions of Section 126 is <strong>punishable with imprisonment upto a period of two years, or with a fine or both.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The Election Commission announced the silence period under Section 126 (1) (b) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
