This shift is linked to <strong>Viksit Bharat 2047<\/strong> and <strong>net-zero emissions by 2070<\/strong>. The <strong>SHANTI Act, 2025<\/strong> replaces earlier laws and opens the sector to private participation. Nuclear energy is now seen as a key source for reliable and low-carbon electricity.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Current Status of Nuclear Energy in India<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Limited share in energy mix:<\/strong> Nuclear capacity is about <strong>8.8 GW<\/strong> and contributes only <strong>3% of electricity generation<\/strong>, showing a very small role.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Electricity capacity distribution:<\/strong> Total capacity reached <strong>476 GW in June 2025<\/strong>, with <strong>50% non-fossil sources<\/strong> and <strong>240 GW thermal power<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Generation imbalance:<\/strong> Thermal power produces <strong>75% of electricity<\/strong>, while renewables with 50% capacity generate only <strong>22%<\/strong>, cement, petrochemicals, and data centres<\/strong> show growing interest.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strengthen R&amp;D:<\/strong> Focus on <strong>molten-salt reactors and thorium-based fuel with HALEU (High Assay Low Enriched Uranium)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reform regulations:<\/strong> Clear rules needed for <strong>civilian and strategic separation<\/strong>, tariffs, and safety.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flexible site norms:<\/strong> Modify <strong>exclusion zone rules<\/strong> for small and single-unit reactors.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>India\u2019s nuclear expansion depends on effective implementation of reforms and strong regulatory clarity.
