Research Gate<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Origin:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It originates from <\/span><b>Lepchajagat <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the <\/span><b>Ghum-Simana ridge <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at an altitude of about <\/span><b>2,361 m <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the<\/span><b> Darjeeling Himalayas, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">below<\/span><b> Tiger Hill <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in<\/span><b>\u00a0Darjeeling District of West Bengal.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>Naming:<\/strong>\u00a0The name \u2018<strong>Balasun<\/strong>\u2018 is derived from the\u00a0<strong>Lepcha language<\/strong>, highlighting local heritage.<\/li>\n<li><b>Course of the river:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <\/span><b>main course of the Balason River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> flows from north to southeast for approximately <\/span><b>51.92 km<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It flows north to south-east, <\/span><b>joining the Mahananda River at Naukaghat (Siliguri).<\/b><\/li>\n<li>So, i<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t is a major<\/span><b> right-bank <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>tributary<\/strong> of the<\/span><b> Mahananda River.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> Mahananda River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> eventually merges with the <\/span><b>Ganga<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> River system.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>River basin:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <\/span><b>river basin spans<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> parts of <\/span><b>Rangli Rangliot, Naxalbari, Matigara, Jorebunglow Sukiapokhri, Mirik, and Kurseong<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The basin area is <\/span><b>largely composed of intensely metamorphosed rocks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including gneiss, slates, phyllite, and schists and the basin area is dominated by <\/span><b>Inceptisol soils.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Tributaries: <\/b>Its right bank and left bank tributaries are:\n<ul>\n<li><b>Right-bank tributaries:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Pulungdung Khola, Rangbang Khola, Marma Khola, Manjwa Jhora, and Dudhia Jhora.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Left-bank tributaries:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Bhim Khola, Rangmuk Khola, Pachhim Khola, Rinchigtong Khola, and Ghatta Hussain Khola.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Drainage pattern:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The drainage network exhibits a <\/span><b>dendritic pattern <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the river valley is <\/span><b>characterised by a steep, ungraded channel, a narrow valley floor, and steep valley sides.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: An application filed before the NGT has raised concerns over violations of environmental laws and riverbank regulations by the construction of the Balason Blues Resort &amp;
