text-align: left;\"><b>Launched by:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It was launched by the <\/span>United Nations Environment Programme <b>(UNEP) and <\/b>the International Union for Conservation of Nature <b>(IUCN)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>First Published:<\/strong> It was first\u00a0released globally in\u00a0<strong>2012.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><b>Key highlights of the report<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span> Report<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recorded <\/span><b>8.6% of ocean and coastal areas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> within documented <strong>protected and conserved areas globally<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around <\/span><b>10% of the global ocean<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is now <strong>within protected and conserved areas.<\/strong><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world still needs to <\/span><b>protect an area almost the size of the Indian Ocean by 2030<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to reach the <\/span><b>30% target<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under the KMGBF.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the <\/span><b>past two years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, nearly <\/span><b>5 million km\u00b2 of ocean<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been newly protected. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only <\/span><b>1.3% of the ocean<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is covered by protected areas where <\/span><b>management effectiveness has been assessed and reported. <\/b>This<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows gaps in monitoring.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New areas were added to the <\/span><b>World Database on Protected and Conserved Areas (WDCPA)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which tracks global progress toward KMGBF targets. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since <\/span><b>2024, 175 marine or coastal sites<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been designated, including<strong> protected areas<\/strong> and <\/span><b>Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New sites span <\/span><b>Asia, Oceania, Africa, Europe, North America, and South America<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Tainui Atea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (French Polynesia, 2025) became the <\/span><b>largest marine protected area<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at <\/span><b>4.5 million km\u00b2<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The expansion of the <\/span><b>Heard Island and McDonald Islands Commonwealth Marine Reserve (Australia)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> added about <\/span><b>309,700 km\u00b2<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <strong>2024<\/strong>.
