{"id":360549,"date":"2026-04-11T15:10:44","date_gmt":"2026-04-11T09:40:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=360549"},"modified":"2026-04-11T15:14:04","modified_gmt":"2026-04-11T09:44:04","slug":"antarctic-fur-seal-arctocephalus-gazella","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/antarctic-fur-seal-arctocephalus-gazella\/","title":{"rendered":"Antarctic Fur Seal (Arctocephalus Gazella)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>News:<\/strong> The International Union for Conservation of Nature has reclassified the Antarctic fur seal from Least Concern to Endangered due to a sharp population decline.<\/p>\n<h2>About Antarctic Fur Seal (Arctocephalus gazella)<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.antarctica.gov.au\/site\/assets\/files\/45617\/rs24938_d1018.800x450.jpg?resize=485%2C273&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella)\" width=\"485\" height=\"273\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Antarctica gov<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">They are <strong>one of eight seals<\/strong> in the<strong> genus\u00a0Arctocephalus.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">They are the <strong>smallest of the Antarctic seals.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Scientific name:<\/strong> Their scientific name is <strong>Arctocephalus gazella.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Habitat:<\/strong> They spend much of their time in the <strong>ocean, hunting for food.<\/strong> On land, they <strong>prefer rocky areas and sometimes rest on beaches or in vegetated zones.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Distribution:<\/strong> They are found mainly on<strong> sub-Antarctic islands south of the Antarctic convergence.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Antarctic fur seals are<strong> rarely found in Antarctica.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Characteristics<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Appearance:<\/strong> Antarctic fur seals have<strong> a slender, pointed muzzle, long external ears, and long vibrissae (whiskers).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Adult males are<strong> usually darker in colour than females<\/strong>, while <strong>females<\/strong> can appear <strong>quite pale<\/strong>, sometimes even <strong>blonde or silvery-grey<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>There is<strong> strong sexual dimorphism<\/strong> in this species, with <strong>adult males being much larger and heavier than females.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Their<strong> fur consists of two layers &#8211; <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>a <strong>dense, water-resistant<\/strong> <strong>underfur<\/strong> that provides insulation<\/li>\n<li><strong>coarse guard hairs<\/strong> that <strong>protect the underfur from water and damage.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Unlike most other Antarctic seals, <strong>they can lift their bodies using strong front flippers<\/strong> and move on land on all fours flippers.<\/li>\n<li>They are <strong>capable of moving quickly<\/strong>, reaching speeds of up to <strong>20 kmh<\/strong> on land and even <strong>faster in water<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Behaviour:<\/strong> They are <strong>solitary animals,<\/strong> except when breeding and molting. They <strong>use vocalisations to communicate.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Diet: <\/strong> They are <strong>carnivores (piscivores)<\/strong>.
