is one of two species of elephant seals.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Scientific name: <\/strong>Their scientific name is <b>Mirounga leonina <\/b>and they belong to the <strong>Phocidae family\u00a0or true seals.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">They are the<strong> largest seals on the planet <\/strong>and also the<strong> biggest mammals on Earth after whales.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">They are the <strong>deepest diving seals on earth.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Habitat:<\/strong> They exhibit an almost circumpolar distribution <strong>in the cold, nutrient-rich waters of the Southern Ocean.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>They <strong>live on land only<\/strong> when <strong>molting, breeding, and giving birth<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Distribution:<\/strong> They\u00a0inhabit <strong>large portions of the southern hemisphere.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">This includes<strong> lands in Antarctica and islands in the southern part of Africa, South America, and Australia.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Characteristics<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Appearance: <\/strong>They have a<strong> thick layer of blubber<\/strong> covered with a yellowish or silvery grey-brown coat.<\/li>\n<li>Every year, they <strong>undergo molt,<\/strong> shedding their fur along with a layer of skin, then regrowing it within about a month.<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>distinctive feature of mature males<\/strong> is their l<strong>arge, trunk-like snout (proboscis)<\/strong>, which is used to amplify their vocalisations.<\/li>\n<li>They show<strong> sexual dimorphism where<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>adult males are much larger and heavier than females.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They <strong>often bunch together in muddy pits called wallows,<\/strong> using their small flippers to cover themselves with <strong>wet sand<\/strong>, which helps keep them <strong>cool<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Diet:<\/strong> They are carnivores and feed upon <strong>cephalopods, pelagic and demersal fish species, and crustaceans, including krill<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">They commonly dive to <strong>depths of 980-2600
