{"id":36085,"date":"2018-11-01T13:28:35","date_gmt":"2018-11-01T07:58:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=36085"},"modified":"2018-11-01T13:28:35","modified_gmt":"2018-11-01T07:58:35","slug":"no-common-ground-on-the-doklam-plateau","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/no-common-ground-on-the-doklam-plateau\/","title":{"rendered":"No common ground on the Doklam plateau:"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-opinion\/no-common-ground-on-the-doklam-plateau\/article19304636.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">No common ground on the Doklam plateau<\/a>: (The Hindu, Editorial) (The Cartographic aggression of China)<\/p>\n<p><b>Context<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China\u2019s current claims over the Doklam plateau can be seen as an instance of cartographic aggression, which China often engages in.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>China&#8217;s action<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China may have temporarily halted its road construction programme, but it appears determined to hold on to its position.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India is equally clear that it cannot afford to back down, having gone to Bhutan\u2019s assistance at a time of need.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>China and India stand-off om Doklam<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For both India \u2013 China, it seems that the Doklam stand-off very differently.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For China, the issue is one of territorial \u2018sovereignty\u2019.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For India, the issue is one of national security.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both appear irreconcilable.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China is generally not known to make concessions when it comes to aspects of territorial \u2018sovereignty\u2019.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This would be the case if Chinese claims to the Doklam plateau are accepted and the tri-junction is accepted to be further south at Mt.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gipmochi.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It would bring China within striking distance of India\u2019s vulnerable \u2018Chicken Neck\u2019, the Siliguri Corridor, the life-line to India\u2019s Northeast.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diplomacy should customarily have been the way out, but relations between India and China are far from cordial at present.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even at the highest levels, there are few signs of a collaboration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No bilateral meeting took place between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit is best example.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Conclusion<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India needs to read proper meanings into China\u2019s unwillingness to hold talks at the highest level.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China is categorically laying down difficult pre-conditions for talks, though India is open to the idea of discussions without pre-conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are well reflected in the differences seen between the high voltage Chinese reaction and the measured response of the Indian side.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No common ground on the Doklam plateau: (The Hindu, Editorial) (The Cartographic aggression of China) Context China\u2019s current claims over the Doklam plateau can be seen as an instance of cartographic aggression, which China often engages in.
