{"id":361052,"date":"2026-04-18T16:02:31","date_gmt":"2026-04-18T10:32:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=361052"},"modified":"2026-04-18T16:02:31","modified_gmt":"2026-04-18T10:32:31","slug":"national-floor-level-minimum-wage-nflmw","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/national-floor-level-minimum-wage-nflmw\/","title":{"rendered":"National Floor Level Minimum Wage (NFLMW)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>News: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Indian government is fast-tracking the introduction of a national floor-level minimum wage (NFLMW) to address differences in worker pay across states.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">About National Floor Level Minimum Wage (NFLMW)<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/media.assettype.com\/theleaflet%2F2025-11-04%2F72w9csza%2Fimage-16.png?resize=360%2C216&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"National Floor Level Minimum Wages (in Rupees), 1996-2017\" width=\"360\" height=\"216\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Chapter 4, Report on the Minimum Wages Act, 1948 for the year 2020.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>National Floor Level Minimum Wage (NFLMW)<\/strong> is the <\/span><b>minimum pay below which no state government can set the minimum wage for workers.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wage includes<\/span><b> basic pay, dearness allowance and retaining allowance,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is to be the basis for calculation of benefits and social security contributions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a<\/span><b> non-statutory measure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to guarantee an increase in minimum wages across states.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was<\/span><b> first introduced <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by the <\/span><b>Ministry of Labour and Employment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><b>1996 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to provide employees and their families with a minimal standard of living.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/labour-codes-explained-pointwise\/\">Code on Wages, 2019<\/a>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">provides for\u00a0<strong>floor wages to<\/strong>\u00a0be\u00a0<strong>fixed by the Central government based on the minimum living standards<\/strong> of employees, including food, clothing,\u00a0etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has been <\/span><b>revised from time to time,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> taking into account the increase in the <\/span><b>Consumer Price Index Number for Industrial Workers.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will be <\/span><b>fixed for different geographical areas to ensure that no state government sets<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0the minimum wage below the notified floor wage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current NFLMW is<\/span><b> \u20b9176 per day. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This has remained unchanged since 2017.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<h2>About Minimum Wages<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the <strong>Code of Wages, 2019<\/strong>, <strong>Minimum wage<\/strong> rates for<\/span><b> time work, piece work for different wage periods (by hours, day or by month) are fixed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the appropriate Government.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>based on the skill of the employee, and\/or geographical area<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>arduousness of work.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The minimum rate of wages <\/span><b>may consist of basis rate of wages and allowances.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government will <\/span>revise the minimum rate of wages in <b>every five years.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The Indian government is fast-tracking the introduction of a national floor-level minimum wage (NFLMW) to address differences in worker pay across states.
