{"id":36116,"date":"2018-11-01T13:38:44","date_gmt":"2018-11-01T08:08:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=36116"},"modified":"2018-11-01T13:38:44","modified_gmt":"2018-11-01T08:08:44","slug":"bengals-medicinal-plants-face-threat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/bengals-medicinal-plants-face-threat\/","title":{"rendered":"Bengal\u2019s medicinal plants face threat:"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-national\/bengals-medicinal-plants-face-threat\/article19291322.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bengal\u2019s medicinal plants face threat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bengal\u2019s curative plants in verge of extinction<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Introduction:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The West Bengal Forest Department on Friday came out with a unique publication titled Medicinal Plant Resources of South Bengal that provides details on 581 species of medicinal plants found across different regions of south Bengal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per the reports, out of 20,000 medicinal plants listed by the World Health Organisation (WHO), India\u2019s contribution is about 5,000 species.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purpose of the publication:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The publication will serve as a very important data bank of medicinal plants in the country<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It will also generate interest among common people to come forward and conserve medicinal plans by growing them into their home gardens<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The publication is also a part of ongoing measures taken up by the State Forest Department to conserve medicinal plants.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The concern:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasing use of medicinal plants as raw materials by different pharmaceutical companies has pushed many of these species to the stage of extinction.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uses of the plants:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The roots of a rambling herb Gloriosa superba found across south Bengal are poisonous are widely sought by pharmaceutical companies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sloth bears are reported to feed on the pulp of the Cassia fistula (amaltus) fruit for stomach ailments. The plant also has medicinal properties for treating skin diseases in humans.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bark of Saraca asoca, which is a threatened tree species classified as \u2018Vulnerable\u2019 on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature\u2019s (IUCN) Red List, is used in the treatment of a number of ailments, including heart disease.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Asparagus officinalis is used for the treatment of jaundice and rheumatism, Asparagus racemosus is not only used to treat human ailments but also that of cattle, and is sold in the markets of south Bengal by locals.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bengal\u2019s medicinal plants face threat: Bengal\u2019s curative plants in verge of extinction Introduction: The West Bengal Forest Department on Friday came out with a unique publication titled Medicinal Plant Resources of South Bengal that provides details on 581 species of medicinal plants found across different regions of south Bengal.
