{"id":361163,"date":"2026-04-20T15:29:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T09:59:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=361163"},"modified":"2026-04-20T15:29:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T09:59:09","slug":"designer-rice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/designer-rice\/","title":{"rendered":"Designer Rice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>News: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists at CSIR \u2013 National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology, Kerala, have developed designer rice.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h2>About Designer Rice<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/static.pib.gov.in\/WriteReadData\/userfiles\/image\/WhatsAppImage2026-02-16at17.15.23PF03.jpeg?resize=400%2C240&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Designer rice\" width=\"400\" height=\"240\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: PIB<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Designer rice is a<\/span><b> type of \u201cfunctional food,\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intentionally <\/span><b>modified to meet specific health and nutritional needs.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Developed by:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 This rice has been <\/span><b>developed by CSIR \u2013 National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The technology has been<\/span><b> transferred by CSIR-NIIST to Tata Consumer Products Limited <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for large-scale production.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Aim: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It aims to <\/span><b>nourish millions and tackle malnutrition one plate at a time.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>How it is created: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Scientists use<strong> food-processing technology<\/strong> in which broken rice is<strong> ground into flour,<\/strong> <strong>enriched with starch, protein, fibre and micronutrients<\/strong> like iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12, and then <strong>reformed into grains<\/strong> that look, feel, and taste like regular rice.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Difference between regular rice and designer rice:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Regular white rice is mainly carbohydrates and has a higher glycemic index (GI),<\/strong> which can cause faster spikes in blood sugar.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Designer rice contains more protein and has a lower GI,<\/strong> making it more nutritionally balanced and helpful for managing blood sugar levels and improving satiety.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Benefits of designer rice:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has a<\/span><b> low glycemic index (below 55), which means it releases energy slowly and helps prevent sudden blood sugar spike<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s, especially beneficial for diabetics.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is<\/span><b> rich in protein, containing over 20% protein<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> compared to 6\u20138% in regular rice.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It<\/span><b> helps combat anaemia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as it is fortified with iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12 embedded directly into the grain.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Scientists at CSIR \u2013 National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology, Kerala, have developed designer rice.\u00a0 About Designer Rice Designer rice is a type of \u201cfunctional food,\u201d intentionally modified to meet specific health and nutritional needs.
